As we enter the eerie season of spookiness, searches for ‘top 10 most haunted places in the world’ have surged by +129% over the past 30 days, showcasing that a growing number of thrill-seekers and ghost hunters are planning their spooky adventures in the upcoming month. 

Taking this trend into account, the travel experts at Planet Cruise have delved into TripAdvisor data to reveal the most haunted destinations from all corners of the globe.

Mary King’s Close in Edinburgh takes the top spot for spookiest destination location 

Situated under Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, Mary King’s Close is a place where people lived and worked between the 1600-1800s. Coincidentally, it also happens to be the most haunted hotspot in the world. Not only does it have the greatest number of ‘scary’ and ‘spooky’ mentions (583 and 497 respectively), but it also has a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5.

Five US locations take the top spots for spookiest locations 

The US has dominated the top 10 leader board for the most haunted locations with a variety of different destinations around the country. 

Eastern State Penitentiary located in Philadelphia, has the second greatest number of ‘haunted’ mentions on reviews on TripAdvisor, at a huge 536, as well as 236 ‘spooky’ and 338 ‘scary’ mentions.

Colorado’s Stanley Park Hotel takes third place, with the greatest number of ‘haunted’ mentions, at an impressive 572. Florida’s St. Augustine Lighthouse takes the 5th spot with 165 ‘haunted’ and 72 ‘scary’ mentions. Bonaventure Cemetery In Savanna takes the 7th spot with 67 ‘haunted’ mentions and 156 ‘spooky’ mentions. The last US location on the leader board is Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana, taking the 8th spot with 179 ‘haunted’ mentions and 62 ‘spooky’ mentions.
