Seek adventure with husky sled rides – Aberdeenshire
For those seeking adventure and an adrenaline boost, a husky sled ride is the ultimate way to spend your Twixmas. HuskyHaven in Aberdeenshire offers a one-of-a-kind experience with their adorable team of Siberian huskies. Guests can take part in hands-on treks, where they’ll have the chance to drive their own dog team along scenic trails in a standing sled. Full instructions are given, and guests are involved in both pre- and post-run preparations. The staff guide each trek, ensuring participants are paired with the right team of huskies based on their abilities. After the adventure, there’s an opportunity to unwind in a cosy cabin with hot drinks and snacks.

What better way to extend the holiday cheer than by meeting some red deer? While these might not be like the ones that accompany Santa on his journeys, they are still very impressive. Encountering red deer in their natural environment is so thrilling, especially stags with their striking antlers. For an unforgettable opportunity to get up close with Scotland’s largest land mammal, visit the Galloway Red Deer Range. Located beside the Galloway Wild Goat Park, it invites the whole family to marvel at these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Embrace the magic at a Christmas village – Dundee
Dundee’s Christmas village is the perfect place to celebrate the magic of Twixmas. With its vibrant atmosphere, you’ll find everything from a real ice rink and a funfair to ten market stalls, all illuminated with dazzling lights and effects. The immersive Santa Claus experience adds a special touch, making it a memorable outing for families. Open daily from 10am to 10pm between December 23rd and January 5th, Dundee’s Christmas Village is free to attend, though some attractions, such as the ice rink and Santa experience, have individual ticket prices.
Take a frosty winter walk – Cardrona Forest
Taking a stroll on a crisp day with a hot drink in hand and breathtaking scenery is the epitome of an ideal winter day out. With stunning views of the surrounding hills and the nearby River Tweed, a walk through Cardrona Forest offers a chance to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of Scotland’s winter landscape. The forest features three beautiful walking trails – The Burn Trail is perfect for a gentle walk, The Kirkburn Trail takes you through the forest with views of the Tweed Valley, while Wallace’s Trail offers a circular path that leads past the historic remains of Cardrona Tower, dating back to the 1500s.
Warm up with a winter whisky tour – Cardhu Distillery & Visitors Centre
Cardhu Distillery offers a truly memorable experience, allowing you to embrace the heart and heritage of Speyside while discovering the artistry behind one of Scotland’s finest whiskies. With a range of informative tours available, there’s something for every whisky enthusiast. And even if you can’t secure a spot on a tour, a visit to their retail store and Tasting Kitchen is still a treat. Enjoy a warm welcome as you unwind with expertly crafted cocktails, sample exquisite drams, and indulge in delicious platters featuring locally sourced Scottish produce. It’s a fantastic way to relax and soak up the festive spirit. You can visit between Christmas and New Year, excluding 25th–26th December and 31st December–2nd January 2025.

The Isle of Rum, Scotland’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary, offers an unforgettable getaway for Twixmas, and it’s one of the best destinations for stargazing and catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights. With no public lighting and only 40 full-time residents, the island’s skies are free from light pollution, providing unparalleled opportunities to admire the stars. Set within a National Nature Reserve, Isle of Rum offers a rich and varied habitat, allowing you to escape to a peaceful retreat for an awe-inspiring break. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, especially during the winter, as there are fewer ferries and accommodation is limited—ensuring a truly exclusive and off-the-grid experience.
Sparkle at the Irn-Bru Carnival – Glasgow
For when the weather isn’t particularly favourable, you can still find some winter sparkle at the Irn-Bru Carnival, Europe’s largest indoor funfair. From the inflatable play area to arcade games like Spill The Milk and Hook-A-Duck along with bungee trampolines, Whac-A-Minion, face painting, and novelty stalls, there’s an exciting range of activities to keep you entertained throughout the day. From the 27th to 31st of December, there’s also a variety of family-friendly activities including themed days, live music performances, treasure hunts and a special Unicorn Experience with ponies.
Enjoy festive theatre – St Andrews and Perth
Is it really Christmas without attending a festive panto? Check out Beauty and the Beast in The Byre Theatre St Andrews. Unlike traditional tales of true love, this story features a Belle who’s not quite in the mood for romance, and her sassy mum who adds plenty of humour to the mix. With plenty of singing, dancing, and laughter, this panto promises fun for all ages. Mother Goose in Perth Theatre is another treat worth checking out. Mother Gabi Goose’s retirement plans are turned upside down when the new owner of McGregory’s Eggery, Greta Garbage, threatens to cage the geese and take everything Gabi holds dear, leading to an adventurous journey with her son and a quirky goose to save the day.

Savour the holiday spirit with some fantastic live music this Twixmas. Catch the lively performances of Mànran at Albert Halls in Stirling or enjoy the electrifying sounds of The Red Hot Chilli Pipers at Elgin Town Hall in Moray. Celebrating the season with vibrant tunes will definitely keep the holiday mood going. Whether you’re a fan of traditional Scottish music with a contemporary flair, such as Mànran, or favour the high-energy bagpipe rock fusion of The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, these performances will surely make a lasting memory.
Relax on a cosy train journey through winter landscapes – Inverness to Stirling
Scotland has some of the most picturesque train routes, making it an ideal cosy escape from the winter chill. Hop aboard the Inverness to Stirling route, which takes approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes with stops in charming towns like Aviemore and Pitlochry. Along the way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Scottish Highlands, serene lochs mirroring the majestic mountains, and historic landmarks. It’s a relaxing and scenic way to soak in the beauty of Scotland’s winter landscapes without braving the cold.
