Casona Roma Norte – the latest addition to Mexico’s distinguished Hamak Hotels collection, known for its dedication to a strong sense of place – is set to open its doors on October 1, 2024. A meticulously restored 1920s mansion offering 32 rooms with modern design, Casona Roma Norte merges historical charm with contemporary sophistication and reflects the vibrant evolution of Mexico City’s Colonia Roma neighborhood. More than a hotel, Casona Roma Norte is a cultural nexus in the heart of Roma Norte —a neighborhood renowned for its creative vibrancy— where six exceptional dining concepts curated by celebrity chef Aquiles Chavez and restauranteur and author Claudio Poblete seamlessly blend culinary artistry with cosmopolitan allure.
Originally constructed in 1923 by Engineer M. Hernandez Cabrera, Casona Roma Norte stands as a testament to Roma Norte’s rich architectural legacy. Blending various historical architectural styles, the Belle Époque building features intricate details and Art Nouveau-influenced nature-inspired designs, with Porfirian high ceilings and grand spaces. Acquired by Rodolfo Roth in the 1990s, the property recently underwent a meticulous renovation by Colonnier Arquitectos, complemented by interior design from Simple Arquitectura. The rooms, adorned in soothing earthy tones and featuring elegant marble-clad bathrooms, provide a refined blend of comfort and artistic expression. Each detail reflects thoughtful design, with in-room amenities that are not only luxurious but also organic and handcrafted by local Mexican artisans, adding a unique cultural touch that enhances the guest experience.
Beyond its stylish accommodations, Casona Roma Norte serves as a vibrant metropolitan hub, featuring six dynamic dining concepts. Suchi Nipona & Sinaloa Cuisine fuses Japanese and Sinaloan flavors into a refined dining experience, showcasing premium Pacific Coast fish and creatively crafted sushi rolls, paired with locally produced Mexican sake. Akamba offers a curated selection of national distillates, including Mezcals, Tequilas, Raicillas, Bacanoras, and Xtabentún, with insights from an expert Mexican Spirits Master Concierge, who can craft cocktails tailored to guests’ palates. Aquiles serves seasonal comfort cuisine crafted from local produce, blending coziness and sophistication to deliver a uniquely memorable dining experience. Matcha Saloon by La Macaria merges the serene ambiance of a Japanese tea room with the French pastry mastery of the celebrated Mexican bakery, La Macaria. The Mirror Speakeasy, set to become the city’s newest hotspot, celebrates the hotel’s storied past by blending global and Mexican influences in a striking Art Deco setting. Holden Rooftop offers panoramic views with flame-grilled fare.
Enhancing the hotel’s cultural depth, art from both local and international artists is displayed throughout the property, transforming the hotel into a gallery in itself. From the rooms and hallways to the reception area, the hotel’s art collection serves as a central feature. A dynamic mural by renowned visual artist James Bullough, whose work has been featured at prestigious global venues such as SCOPE Art Show in Miami, Berlin’s Urban National Museum, and Goldshteyn Saatort Gallery in Paris, adds a striking element to the hotel’s aesthetic. Each room features the photography of Santiago Arau, whose acclaimed images have been exhibited worldwide, including at Casa de América in Madrid, Museo del Barrio in New York, and Hello World Gallery in Vienna. The hallways are adorned with the dreamlike works of Mexico City artist and psychoanalyst Carolina Barrios, while the lobby features artist Maria Rec’s cutout collages.
