As the summer season comes to a close, Mackinac Island extends its heartfelt thanks to visitors, residents, and hardworking staff who contributed to yet another unforgettable chapter. From historic tours to scenic bike rides and world-class hospitality, the island continues to offer a unique getaway experience to all who visit.
Mackinac Island remains a cherished destination for visitors from around the world, captivating hearts with its unique blend of history and natural beauty. This year, the island garnered notable national recognition, being named the No. 1 Best Summer Travel Destination and the No. 2 Best Fall Travel Destination in the USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards and the No. 3 Best Island in the Continental U.S. by Travel + Leisure. These accolades underscore the island’s timeless charm and commitment to offering unforgettable experiences that draw visitors back season after season.
This season was marked by unforgettable events that celebrated the spirit and charm of the Island, namely with the celebration of the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race. As one of the island’s most iconic events, this annual race not only honors the Island’s maritime history but attracts sailors and spectators from around the world, creating an atmosphere filled with camaraderie. Additionally, beloved events like the annual Lilac Festival and Fudge Festival delighted guests with activities paying homage to two of the Island’s icons.
“Our heartfelt thanks go out to the visitors and each and every team member on the island who helped make this season truly exceptional,” said Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau. “Your dedication is what makes this island so special and as we transition into fall, there’s still plenty for visitors to enjoy from seasonal dining experiences complete with stunning views of fall foliage, picturesque carriage and bicycle tours, shopping in our charming downtown storefronts, and our signature Halloween Weekend festivities.”
The season isn’t done just yet and October is a special time for visitors to slow down and experience all the splendor of the season, including two festive events – Halloween Weekend (Oct. 25-27) and The Great Turtle Trail Run (Oct. 26). During this final weekend of celebrations, families can enjoy trick-or-treating and festive costume parties, runners and outdoor enthusiasts can take in the island’s beautiful fall scenery on a trail run or walk, and more relaxing pursuits like birdwatching, fine dining, and golf are always available to those looking to unwind.
Select restaurants and properties are also offering fall-inspired dishes including Butternut Squash Soup at the 1852 Grill Room, Apple Cider Glazed Pork Porterhouse at Round Island Kitchen, Caramel Apple Fried Ice Cream at The Gate House, and Pumpkin Spice or Maple Walnut Fudge at various fudge shops. For autumnal drink enthusiasts, don’t miss the Apple Cider Martini at Seabiscuit Café or the Pumpkin Spiced Hummer at Mission Point Resort.

- Outdoor Activities on Mackinac Island: Open year-round! With the right gear, October is a great month to enjoy outdoor adventures on Mackinac Island such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, and golf.
- Places to Stay: Lodging on Mackinac Island begins to close at the end of October with some hotels, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts closing mid-October. Pro tip: October generally features more hotel discounts and friendlier rates compared to peak season.
- Restaurants: The majority of restaurants on Mackinac Island stay open through October with live music and a late night menu at 3 or 4 restaurants and bars.
- Horse-Drawn Carriage Tours: Mackinac Island carriage tours are available until October 26 but have limited hours. Reserve tickets early in the morning or afternoon to secure your spot.
- Historic Mackinac Island Sites: Fort Mackinac will be open until October 26, while other historical buildings such as Fort Holmes Blockhouse, the Richard and Jane Manoogian Art Museum, and the Biddle House & the Mackinac Island Native American Museum have already closed.
- Shopping: Mackinac Island shops offer a variety of gifts, clothing, souvenirs, fudge, and more! Shops generally open around 9 a.m. and stay open through the last ferry of the day.
