Somabay Golf announces GEO International Sustainability Certificate and new landmark partnership with Le Club Golf

Following a successful 2024, Somabay Golf is delighted to start the new year with the announcement of two landmark achievements – the awarding of the GEO International Sustainability Certificate to its Somabay Golf Course, and a collaboration with Le Club Golf which will see Somabay host the Amateur World Cup Finals for three consecutive years.

The awarding of the GEO International Sustainability Certificate sees Somabay Golf Course become the first course in Egypt and one of only four in Africa to gain GEO Certified® status, reflecting Somabay’s commitment to sustainability and strengthening its position as a leading sports destination. The GEO Certificate® recognizes golf courses that prioritize environmental responsibility, community values, and the enrichment of nature, values which Somabay Golf holds as part of its core ethos.

Sustainability is at the heart of the development of Somabay Golf, with indigenous, water-saving plants having been increasingly incorporated into the facilities. The 18-hole championship course was also recently relayed using Paspalum Platinum, which is tolerant to both salt and high temperatures, allowing for the reduction of water usage, whilst a new 5mw solar plant has also been implemented to reduce the destination’s carbon footprint.

Further elevating the destination’s golf offering as it enters 2025 is Somabay’s collaboration with Le Club Golf. In association with The Cascades Golf Resort Spa & Thalasso, this will see the destination become Le Club Golf’s exclusive Egyptian partner, hosting the Amateur World Cup Finals in Egypt from 2025 to 2027. The collaboration showcases Somabay as a premier destination for luxury golf tourism, highlighting its world-class facilities to a global audience.

The Amateur World Cup Finals at Somabay will feature top amateur golfers from across Le Club Golf’s European network, with The Cascades Golf Resort, Spa & Thalasso hosting guests during the tournament. A Hosting Resort Invitational will also run alongside the finals, with tailored packages on offer for golf lovers to participate in the event.

Somabay Golf Course is one of the region’s standout courses, having been meticulously designed by the world-renowned architect Gary Player. The destination’s golfing facilities also offer a floodlit Par 3 Challenge Course and 5,000 sqm Short Game Arena designed by James Edwards of EDI Design and Tim Lobb of Lobb and Partners, as well as a floodlit double-ended driving range.
