Paros, a small Greek paradise, is part of the Cyclades, a popular island group, and is undoubtedly a must-visit destination. It is known for its picturesque villages, iconic windmills, whitewashed buildings, and charming narrow alleys. However, what truly makes Paros special are its sunny, stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and breathtaking sunsets over the Aegean Sea.
This guide provides all the information you need for an unforgettable vacation in Paros. What are the best places to visit? What are the top things to do? How can you make the most of your days, and when is the best time to go? Let’s find out below!
How to get to Paros
You can easily reach Paros by ferry or plane. The island’s airport is relatively small, so if you’re arriving on an international flight, you may land in Athens first. From there, you can take a short flight to Paros—the fastest and most convenient way to reach the island.
Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Piraeus Port to Paros. The journey lasts between 3 to 5.5 hours, depending on the ferry you choose. Since ferry seats are limited, we recommend booking well in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak season.
If you’re planning to go island-hopping around the Cyclades, you can also fly directly to Mykonos or Santorini and then take a ferry to Paros.
How to get around Paros
When you arrive in Paros, the best way to get around is by renting a car. With so many sights and activities spread across the island, exploring it piece by piece is essential. A car provides flexibility, comfort, and the freedom to visit Paros’ top attractions at your own pace, whenever it suits your vacation plans. Plus, it allows you to embark on an incredible road trip around the island.
There are several car rental agencies at the port of Paros in Parikia. However, we recommend renting a car from Paros airport so you can start exploring the island as soon as you arrive. Other transportation options include taking the bus, though schedules are infrequent, or using a taxi, which can be a bit pricey.
Best time to visit Paros
The shoulder season, which runs from June to September, is the best time to visit Paros. If you want to enjoy pleasant weather and explore the island without the crowds, it’s better to visit during this period rather than the peak season (July and August). Additionally, accommodation prices are significantly lower during the shoulder season.
Where to stay in Paros
The best place to stay in Paros is Naoussa. This charming seaside town offers everything you need, including boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, cafes, bars, as well as delightful shops, picturesque whitewashed streets, and beautiful photo opportunities.
If you’re looking for something a bit more affordable, consider staying in Parikia. The town has many great hotels and B&Bs, and it’s also a quaint area with plenty of restaurants, shops, and lovely stone-paved streets.
For a more peaceful experience, you can also explore accommodation options in smaller villages on the island, such as Marpissa, Piso Livadi, and Pounda. These areas offer a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
Best things to do in Paros
There are plenty of things to do in Paros, but if you visit, make sure not to miss these must-see attractions:
Explore Naoussa
The most picturesque town in Paros is Naoussa. While much less crowded, it offers a vibe similar to Mykonos town. This charming fishing village features a beautiful port, white cobblestone streets, seaside eateries, lovely boutique shops, and stunning photo opportunities.
Naoussa is best explored by wandering through its narrow, labyrinthine alleys. However, the old port of Naoussa at sunset is the highlight of the area! The ancient Venetian castle, which once served as a lookout for pirate raids, is also located near the port.
Feel free to take your time, take as many pictures as you please, and get a taste of what Greek summer feels like!
Hike in Paros Park
Paros Park features a 7-kilometer network of easy walking trails that cover the Agios Ioannis Detis peninsula, leading you past stunning rock formations, hidden coves, caves, and a historic lighthouse. Depending on the route you choose, hiking Paros Park takes between thirty to sixty minutes to complete. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding islands and the Aegean Sea.
Relax in Monastiri Beach
After the hike, you can relax at the beautiful Monastiri Beach, located on the peninsula within Paros Park. This secluded, sandy beach offers calm, azure waters and has sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. Since it tends to get very crowded during the high season, we recommend booking your sunbed several days in advance.
Take some pictures in Kolymbithres Beach
Just a 5-minute drive from Monastiri Beach, you’ll find Kolymbithres Beach. Known for its unique rock formations, small sandy coves, and crystal-clear turquoise lagoons, it’s one of the best spots on the island to capture stunning photos. Your followers will be thrilled (and maybe a little jealous) when you share them on your social media!
Spend a day in Antiparos
Antiparos is just a short ferry ride from Paros, with ferries running every couple of hours at very affordable prices. You can catch the ferry from Pounda Port, located on the southeast side of Paros. Antiparos is the perfect island for exploring and discovering hidden beaches. It’s more rural and remote, with many turn-offs and dirt roads. Even more so than Paros, Antiparos gives you the authentic feeling of being on a small island in the heart of the Aegean Sea.
Enjoy a meal in Piso Livadi
Piso Livadi is a small fishing village on the east coast of the island, just a 5-minute drive from Marpissa. This coastal village is the perfect spot to savor local Parian cuisine. You can enjoy fresh seafood at the restaurants near the small port or at the nearby beach. The port also serves as the starting point for various daily boat tours.
To sum up, Paros is the perfect destination for an ideal Greek summer experience. Rent a car, explore the island at your own pace, and make sure to visit Naoussa, Paros Park, Monastiri Beach, Kolymbithres Beach, and enjoy the local cuisine in Piso Livadi. Make the most of your vacation and have the best summer ever!
