TradeWinds Sets Sail Toward a Fully Sustainable Future in Luxury Yachting

Long before sustainability became a global call to action TradeWinds—the purpose-led, eco-conscious yacht charter company—had already embedded this mission into its DNA. Now, as the United Nations urges the travel and tourism sector to accelerate sustainability measures if we’re to reach the 2030 goal, TradeWinds stands out as a company that is not only aligned, but already delivering results.

A Long-Term Commitment

TradeWinds, who celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, has long prioritized the protection of fragile marine ecosystems across the globe. In 2019, the company made the conscious decision to halt the addition of new yachts to its fleet until technology allowed for clean-energy propulsion. That decision set the stage for a new era in luxury yachting, one powered by wind, sun, and water.

“Sustainability is not a trend for us—it’s non-negotiable,” said Ricardo Flores, Vice President of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations. “We made a conscious choice years ago to be part of the solution. Now that the UN is calling for accelerated action, we’re proud to be aligned and ahead of the curve.”

Leading the Industry with Electric Yachts

This commitment came to life in January 2024 with the launch of AURORA, the world’s first smart electric propulsion pleasure yacht. Since then, TradeWinds has expanded its electric fleet with the addition of Twenty5, Ohana, and Hadali, each custom-built by French shipbuilder Fountaine Pajot. By 2036, TradeWinds’ 40-plus fleet will be fully sustainable and predominantly electric-powered.

Contrary to some travelers’ beliefs that going green can mean forsaking luxury and comfort, the electric yachts are the most comfortable in the fleet. Running on renewable energy sources including solar panels, hydro-generators, and wind turbines, they offer a low-emission, vibration-free, and quiet sailing experience.

Going off the Grid

In addition to their yacht charters, TradeWinds manages several land properties across the globe that follow their sustainability-first model. In Tonga, Mandala, a private island resort, operates entirely off the grid thanks to solar energy, rainwater collection and a reverse osmosis systems. All the structures were built with locally sourced materials, with fun touches like giant shells that serve as night lights. The newly-opened Villa Selena, located on the stunning Placencia Peninsula in Belize, is also fully solar powered so guests can enjoy modern comforts while knowing their stay has a lighter footprint on the local environment.

A Culture of Sustainability: Training from the Inside Out

Through the TradeWinds Academy, all crew and staff are trained to integrate eco-friendly practices into their daily work. This includes eliminating toxic cleaning products, reducing single-use plastics, sourcing good locally and finding small efficiencies that add up. The TradeWinds Academy program also ensure every team member is well-versed in the company’s sustainability goals and equipped to inform guests about its core values and practices. “At TradeWinds, we want our entire team to understand that every choice matters,” said Flores.
