Journey Beyond has unveiled a new era in Australian rail travel with the introduction of its much-anticipated Aurora Australis Suites. The suites made their inaugural journey on 4 April aboard the Indian Pacific, departing from Perth and arriving in Sydney, marking a significant moment for luxury travel in Australia.
This latest addition represents the most substantial upgrade to Journey Beyond’s onboard experience to date. With the debut of the Australis Suite and Aurora Suite, guests can expect a heightened level of space, refined design, and personalized service—placing these iconic rail journeys firmly among the world’s premier luxury travel experiences.
Chris Tallent, CEO of Journey Beyond, describes the launch as a milestone for experiential travel in Australia. He notes that while the company’s trains have long connected travelers with some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes, the new suites take that journey even further—offering a private, tranquil retreat where guests can fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Demand has already proven strong, with 95 percent of departures for the 2026 season sold out and bookings now open for 2027.
The interiors, designed by globally acclaimed firm Woods Bagot, draw inspiration from both classic Art Deco rail styling and the textures and tones of the Australian landscape. According to Woods Bagot Director Rosina Di Maria, the design pays homage to the nation’s pastoral heritage, reflecting the influence of wool and leather industries. Rich timber finishes, natural stone, and tactile elements such as sheepskin and leather create layered, sophisticated spaces that feel both timeless and distinctly Australian.
Guests staying in the Aurora Australis Suites will enjoy a fully tailored experience, including dedicated butler service, private in-suite dining, and a personalized bar curated to individual tastes. Premium Champagne Bollinger La Grande Année is served throughout the journey, while the first evening features an exceptional dining experience showcasing standout Australian ingredients—from tuna tartare and Kangaroo Island lobster to top-grade Wagyu beef.

The experience extends beyond the train with exclusive Off Train Experiences reserved for suite guests. On the Indian Pacific, eastbound travelers can explore Kalgoorlie’s heritage with a visit to Paddy Hannan’s Mine, paired with a scenic flight over the vast Super Pit. Westbound journeys include an elegant evening in the Adelaide Hills, complete with regional wines and a refined dinner at Hardy’s Verandah.
On The Ghan, northbound guests can take to the skies over Nitmiluk National Park, enjoying a helicopter flight across all 13 gorges before landing for a private champagne experience in the outback. Southbound travelers will fly to Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park for a private lunch and guided exploration of landmarks such as Mutitjulu Waterhole.
Following their debut on the Indian Pacific, the Aurora Australis Suites will also be introduced across The Ghan and Great Southern routes during their seasonal operations. This launch signals a major step forward for luxury rail travel in Australia, further cementing Journey Beyond’s reputation as a leader in immersive, high-end travel experiences and offering a remarkable new way to explore the country’s diverse landscapes.
