A new chapter is about to begin in one of London’s most storied districts. Opening on September 1, 2026, The Shepherd Mayfair is an intimate 82-room boutique hotel that brings contemporary luxury to the heart of Shepherd Market while embracing more than four centuries of local history. Occupying the site believed to be Mayfair’s oldest house, the hotel blends thoughtful design, neighborhood charm, and a fresh culinary destination that pays tribute to the origins of one of London’s most prestigious addresses.
Rather than positioning itself as another grand Mayfair hotel, The Shepherd aims to offer a more personal experience—one deeply connected to the community that surrounds it.
A Hotel Built on Mayfair’s Origins
The story of The Shepherd Mayfair begins in 1618 with a modest building known simply as The Cottage, where a shepherd once tended his flock.
The surrounding fields later became home to the famous annual May Fair, the lively festival that ultimately gave Mayfair its name. In the 18th century, architect and developer Edward Shepherd transformed the area into the charming enclave now known as Shepherd Market, a neighborhood of narrow streets, boutiques, cafés, and hidden courtyards that remains one of London’s best-kept secrets.
Today, that rich history serves as the inspiration for every aspect of the hotel’s identity.
Fayre: A Restaurant Inspired by London’s Historic Fair
At the heart of the new hotel is Fayre, a 62-seat restaurant designed to feel like one of London’s classic neighborhood dining rooms.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant celebrates seasonal British ingredients alongside refined European classics in an atmosphere that is elegant without feeling formal. The interiors feature rich berry tones, dark timber paneling, and comfortable banquette seating, while a dramatic mural by urban artist Adam Ellis brings the story of the historic May Fair to life.
The artwork depicts scenes from the original fair—including livestock markets, entertainers, jugglers, and games of chance—creating a playful connection between the restaurant and the neighborhood’s fascinating past.
A Menu Rooted in British Seasonal Cooking
Rather than following fleeting culinary trends, Fayre focuses on timeless dishes prepared with exceptional seasonal produce.
Guests can begin with small plates such as lobster and prawn brioche rolls, braised beef short rib croquettes, citrus-cured trout, or fresh scallops before moving on to hearty mains including Gloucester Old Spot pork chop, a beef Wellington pithivier, dry-aged steaks, and carefully crafted vegetarian dishes.
One of the restaurant’s signature features is its imaginative “Puddings by the Glass” collection, where classic British desserts are elegantly presented in tall glasses as a theatrical nod to the original May Fair. The opening menu features a strawberry and Champagne trifle, while a new dessert will be introduced each week, inspired by recipes and flavors from the fair’s historic era. Traditional favorites including Paris-Brest, Baked Alaska, and blackberry Bakewell tart round out the dessert menu.
Spaces That Evolve Throughout the Day
Dining extends well beyond Fayre.
Guests can enjoy a relaxed coffee or casual lunch at The Lounge, a café-style space with indoor seating and an outdoor terrace overlooking Shepherd Market. Later in the evening, Teddy’s, a hidden cocktail bar tucked away on the lower ground floor, offers a more intimate setting for expertly crafted drinks.
Together, the three venues are designed to serve both hotel guests and neighborhood residents, reinforcing the property’s ambition to become part of the daily rhythm of Shepherd Market rather than simply another destination hotel.
Boutique Design with a Neighborhood Feel
Designed by Timothy Shepherd of Shepherd&, the hotel features 82 guestrooms and suites spread across six floors.
The interiors reinterpret the elegance of Mayfair’s historic townhouses while creating spaces that feel warm, contemporary, and distinctly residential. Instead of the grandeur traditionally associated with Mayfair’s landmark hotels, The Shepherd embraces a more intimate scale that reflects the personality of the surrounding neighborhood.
Discovering Shepherd Market
One of the hotel’s greatest advantages is its location.
Hidden just moments from Green Park, Shepherd Market remains one of central London’s most charming districts. Independent boutiques, historic pubs, art galleries, and intimate restaurants line its cobbled lanes, offering visitors an authentic side of Mayfair often overlooked by first-time visitors.
From here, guests are within walking distance of Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, Bond Street, Piccadilly, and many of London’s finest museums, theaters, and luxury shopping districts.
A Fresh Addition to London’s Boutique Hotel Scene
With its deep historical roots, thoughtful design, neighborhood-focused hospitality, and restaurant celebrating Britain’s culinary traditions, The Shepherd Mayfair promises to bring something refreshingly different to one of London’s most prestigious postcodes.
When it opens this September, the boutique hotel will offer travelers not just a place to stay, but an opportunity to experience Mayfair through the stories, flavors, and character that have shaped the neighborhood for more than 400 years.
