Safari itineraries traditionally balance early game drives with treatments at a central spa. Kuganha, a new luxury retreat in South Africa’s Western Cape, takes a more private approach by placing an extensive collection of wellness facilities inside each guest suite.
Now open in the Cape Tankwa Karoo, the property occupies part of a 10,000-hectare rewilded Big Five conservancy. Its malaria-free location is less than two-and-a-half hours by road from Cape Town, making it possible to combine a city stay with a wildlife experience without adding a domestic flight.
With only ten tented suites, Kuganha has been designed around privacy, flexible schedules and a close connection to the surrounding landscape.
A Safari Lodge Built Around Personal Wellness
Kuganha describes its concept as a “wellness safari,” but the distinction goes beyond adding massages to a conventional game-viewing itinerary.
Instead of asking guests to book treatments in a shared spa, each tented suite contains its own private wellness area. This allows heat, cold, flotation and relaxation sessions to be incorporated around game drives, meals and downtime without following a rigid treatment schedule.
Guests receive an introductory wellness journey explaining how to use the facilities safely. From there, the experience can be adapted to individual preferences rather than presented as a fixed or highly prescriptive program.
The private facilities include a sauna, steam room, Himalayan salt halotherapy room, flotation pool, ice plunge bath and hot tub. Double massage beds allow treatments to be delivered inside the suite, while soaking baths, indoor and outdoor showers, a relaxation lounge and private plunge pool expand the options for unstructured downtime.
The breadth of the facilities is unusual for an individual safari suite. However, guests with medical conditions, or those who are pregnant, should seek appropriate guidance before using intensive heat, cold or flotation experiences.
Ten Expansive Tented Suites
Each of Kuganha’s ten accommodations measures at least 320 square metres, giving the suites more in common with private villas than traditional safari tents. The property positions them among the largest one-bedroom tented suites in Africa.
Set near a waterhole, the suites are arranged to provide views of the conservancy while maintaining a sense of seclusion. Interiors include a king-size bedroom, lounge with a fireplace, guest bathroom and kitchenette or refreshment area.
Two-level decks extend the living space outdoors, with private pools and relaxation areas facing the surrounding landscape. Yoga equipment is also provided for guests who want to incorporate independent movement or meditation into their stay.
Although the suites are highly private, this remains an unfenced wildlife environment. Guests are escorted between accommodations and the lodge’s shared areas after dark.
Big Five Experiences in a Rewilded Conservancy
Wellness may distinguish Kuganha from other luxury lodges, but wildlife remains central to the stay.
Private morning and afternoon game drives explore a landscape that has undergone an extensive rewilding process. Indigenous vegetation has been rehabilitated, while wildlife once lost from the region has been reintroduced.
The conservancy is now home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo—along with cheetahs and other species associated with the Cape Karoo ecosystem. Conservation-focused activities, including educational experiences connected to cheetah conservation, complement traditional wildlife viewing.
The private-drive format gives guests more control over the pace of each outing. Time can be spent following a particular sighting, learning about the rehabilitation of the landscape or returning to the lodge earlier for a wellness session.
This flexibility should appeal to travellers who are interested in wildlife but do not necessarily want every day governed by the conventional safari timetable.
Flexible Dining Across the Property
Dining follows the same personalised philosophy. Meals can be served in the restaurant overlooking the infinity pool and waterhole or arranged privately in a guest suite.
The culinary program places an emphasis on fresh, seasonal and locally sourced produce. Depending on the day and individual preferences, the experience may include harvest-table breakfasts, lighter tapas-style lunches, formal dinners, outdoor boma evenings or informal barefoot dining.
A pantry and refreshment area in each suite also gives guests more freedom between scheduled meals. Dietary preferences can be incorporated into the stay, although these should be discussed with the property before arrival.

Connecting Cape Town with the Cape Karoo
Kuganha’s accessibility is one of its strongest advantages. Many South African safari destinations require an additional flight or a lengthy transfer after arriving in Cape Town. Kuganha can be reached by road in under two-and-a-half hours, allowing it to fit naturally into a wider Western Cape itinerary.
Travellers could begin with several days exploring Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula before heading inland for a contrasting experience defined by open landscapes, wildlife and privacy.
The retreat currently welcomes guests aged 16 and older and has a two-night minimum stay. Reservations are open through the official Kuganha website.
Kuganha will be most appealing to couples and solo travellers looking for a quieter, highly private alternative to the traditional lodge experience. Its combination of private wellness facilities and Big Five game viewing creates a distinctive reason to venture beyond Cape Town—particularly for travellers who want their safari to leave meaningful room for rest.
