Topping our list as the most cost effective city in Japan is Nara, with a final cost efficiency score of 9.1 out of ten. Once the capital of Japan, this city is filled with temples and artwork dating back to the 8th century. As well as its natural beauty, Nara is known for the wild deer that often roam free around the city, making it a must for nature lovers. While it ranks third in terms of attraction ratings, an average meal in most restaurants in Nara will set you back just $26.78!

In second place is Chiba, with a cost efficiency score of 8.9 out of ten. Chiba has the cheapest hotel and rail travel prices out of all cities in the top ten. The average hotel price in Chiba for two adults is just $102.37, with a rail pass costing just $2.93. Home to Japan’s two disney parks, as well as Kujukuri Beach, Japan’s longest sandy coast-line, Chiba is perfect for both fun and relaxation.

At number 3 is Kumamoto, with a cost-efficiency rating of 8.3 out of ten. Kumamoto is perfect for exploring the beautiful natural landscape of Japan. It’s also one of the cheapest cities for rail travel, with a rail travel day pass costing just $4.65. Kumamoto is home to Mount Aso, one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, and is known as ‘The Land of Fire’, making it an exciting and breathtaking city to explore.
