This summer, Costa Navarino, the sustainably driven destination in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, expands its authentic experiences program and invites guests to discover the region’s heritage, landscapes and living traditions. Historical journeys, gastronomy, cultural encounters, craft workshops and wellness rituals draw inspiration from Messinia’s history and Homeric mythology encouraging guests to engage with the destination in meaningful and authentic ways.

CULTURAL EXPLORATIONS
- A Philosophy Walk in the ‘Echoes of Odyssey”. Held within the Messinian countryside and led by a Professor of Ancient Greek Literature, this experience explores ethical dilemmas, heroism, and the concept of nostos(homecoming), connecting Homeric themes to modern life.
- Kalamata Cultural Roots: Costumes and Dance. Starting with Victoria Karelia Museum to explore the artistry and symbolism of traditional Greek dress before taking part in a lively dance workshop and introduction to the rhythms and traditions of Messinian culture.
CREATIVE WORKSHOPS
- In the Sculpting and Marble-Carving Workshop, guests work alongside a master sculptor whose restoration projects include Ancient Olympia, the Acropolis of Athens, and Delos to discover the art of sculpture through a hands-on workshop inspired by the landscapes of Costa Navarino.
- The Natural Bundle Dyeing Workshop draws on Messinia’s textile heritage, beginning with a walk through the landscape to identify plants historically used for dyeing. Inside the studio, fabrics are transformed through bundle dyeing techniques, where natural pigments create organic patterns on silk.
- Traditional Weaving and Symbolism in Messinia introduces guests to hand weaving on frame and inkle looms. Centered on the protective mati (evil eye) symbol, the workshop connects everyday craft to folklore and identity.
- The Weaving Like Penelope experience approaches the loom through the lens of Homer’s Odyssey. The experience explores the legendary story of Penelope and the symbolic power of the loom. Through rhythm, repetition and natural materials, weaving becomes a living connection to Greek myth, craft heritage and storytelling.
- Additionally, Discover Ancient Olympia and the Art of Sculpture. Following the archaeological tour of Ancient Olympia, guests encounter the living tradition of Greek sculpture, experimenting with clay under the guidance of the artist.
GASTRONOMY
- Authentic Village Cooking – A Deeper Exploration builds upon traditional Messinian recipes, introducing a more elaborate seasonal menu guided by local women who share techniques and ingredients passed down through generations.
- Honey Tasting led by a local explores the golden flavors of Messinia through a guided tasting of locally produced honey varieties, revealing the region’s beekeeping traditions and the distinctive aromas, textures and character of this treasured natural product.
- This year the enhanced Olive Oil Tasting Experience with Food Pairing, guided by a world-renowned olive oil expert, pairs four Greek olive oils with seasonal Mediterranean accompaniments.
WELLNESS TREATMENTS
- AWAY Spa at W Costa Navarino and Anazoe Spa at Navarino Dunes, introduce The Odyssean Journey drawing inspiration from Homer’s epic return. Beginning with sea salt and olive oil exfoliation reminiscent of the Aegean’s cleansing waves, the ritual continues with a clay and rosemary cocoon and concludes with a flowing candle massage using warm lavender and sandalwood. The sequence calms the nervous system and restores balance echoing Odysseus’ serene return to Ithaca.
- Anazoe Spa at Navarino Dunes introduces the Odysseus Trilogy Adventures. The Oleotherapy Trilogy is a ritual rooted in the healing power of olive oil, the Herbal Trilogy is revitalization of body and mind through mediterranean herbs and the Sea Trilogy, a reconnection with the restorative power of the sea.
HISTORICAL TOUR
- The Messinian Odyssey – Exploring the Homeric Landscapes (available in both a 6.5-hour long version and a 4-hour short version) traces the Mycenaean world of King Nestor across Pylos and Messenia. Centered on the Palace of Nestor, with its architecture, fresco remains, and Linear B tablets—among the earliest written Greek records—the journey continues to the Pylos Archaeological Museum and Niokastro Castle.
- The World of Ancient Olympia introduces guests to the birthplace of the Olympic Games through a guided exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the sanctuary of Zeus to the stories of athletes, pilgrims, benefactors, and artists, the tour reveals Olympia’s role as one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world.
- At the coast, Methoni Castle & Coastal Cruise of Messinia begins with a guided exploration of the coastal history of Messinia with a guided visit to the castles of Niokastro in Pylos and Methoni. Discover the story of the Battle of Navarino and centuries of Venetian, Ottoman and Byzantine influence. Dramatic sea views and powerful historic landmarks create an unforgettable journey along the Messinian coast.
- Finally, the Treasure Hunt Exploration at Ancient Messene blends archaeology and storytelling. The interactive treasure hunt blends history, mythology and playful discovery where guests follow clues across the archaeological site while exploring temples, stadiums and ancient monuments.
