Meghalaya is famously called the “Abode of Clouds,” and this one place has been on my bucket list for quite a while. There was something about its lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and unique culture that stood out like an irresistible invitation. So, when I stumbled upon fantastic Thrillophilia reviews, I decided to book a 5-day trip through them to this majestic land of clouds.
Day 1: Shillong – The Scotland of the East
When I landed in Guwahati, I was greeted by Thrillophilia’s friendly representative, who ensured a smooth transfer to Shillong which is Meghalaya’s charming capital. The scenic drive itself was a visual treat, with lush hills, misty landscapes, and the winding Umiam Lake, where we stopped for a quick break.
Upon reaching Shillong, I checked into a delightful hotel in the heart of the city. I particularly loved how my stay offered a fantastic view of Shillong’s serene hills. I enjoyed a delicious lunch and then visited the nearby local hotspots, starting with Ward’s Lake. Its calm waters and vibrant gardens were perfect for a relaxing stroll.
Later, I also explored the Don Bosco Museum, where I got a chance to immerse myself in the rich tribal heritage of the region. I spent the evening exploring the bustling Police Bazaar and trying out local food. I also picked out some really wonderful handicraft items.
Day 2: Cherrapunji – The Land of Rain and Wonders
The next day, I headed to Cherrapunji which is famous for being one of the wettest places on Earth. The drive was mesmerising, with mist-covered valleys and roaring waterfalls at every turn. Thrillophilia had arranged for a knowledgeable guide who gave us great insights into the wonderful attractions around Cherrapunji.
The first stop was Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall. Watching the water cascade from towering cliffs into a green-blue pool below was a surreal experience. I also visited Mawsmai Caves which is a labyrinth of limestone formations that felt like stepping into another world. The unique rock formations hanging from the ceiling and rising from the ground were truly a marvel of nature.
For me, however, the highlight of the day was the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint. This panoramic cascade of seven streams flowing side by side was a sight to behold, especially under the soft afternoon light. As evening approached, I checked into a cosy eco-lodge in Cherrapunji and fell asleep to the sound of distant waterfalls.
Day 3: Trek to Nongriat – The Living Root Bridges
My third day in Meghalaya was all about adventure and exploration. After breakfast, I set off for the trek to Nongriat which is home to the iconic double-decker living root bridge. This trek was surprisingly quite strenuous as it involved descending over 3,000 steps! But it was worth it!
The living root bridges, made by the Khasi tribe using the roots of rubber trees, were living proof of the deep connection between humans and nature. Standing on these bridges, surrounded by dense forests and the sound of a gurgling stream below, was a moment etched in my memory for eternity.
Thrillophilia had thoughtfully included rest stops and refreshments, which made the challenging trek manageable.
Day 4: Mawlynnong and Dawki – Asia’s Cleanest Village and Emerald Waters
In the first half of the fourth day, we visited the Mawlynnong village which is recognised as Asia’s cleanest village. Walking through its spotless lanes adorned with flowering plants was a stunning experience. The locals’ commitment to cleanliness and eco-friendly living was truly inspiring.
Next was Dawki, near the Bangladesh border. Here, I experienced one of Meghalaya’s most iconic attractions – the crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River. As I glided over the river in a small wooden boat, I could see rocks and fish beneath the glass-like surface. It felt like floating on air!
Thrillophilia had arranged for a picnic lunch by the river, which added a special touch to the day.
Day 5: Departure
On my final day, I visited Laitlum Canyons, a lesser-known gem just outside Shillong. The views here were breathtaking – rolling hills and deep gorges stretching endlessly under a bright blue sky. Returning to Shillong, I had time for some last-minute shopping before bidding goodbye to Meghalaya.
Every moment of my journey through Meghalaya felt like a page out of a nature lover’s dream. From the roaring waterfalls of Cherrapunji to the pristine waters of Dawki and the cultural charm of Mawlynnong, this state is a paradise waiting to be explored.
Thrillophilia’s seamless planning and attention to detail made the trip stress-free and incredibly enjoyable. The accommodations were comfortable, the guides were knowledgeable, and the itinerary balanced adventure, culture, and relaxation perfectly.
