Finnair announces route from Toronto to Helsinki, Finland

The Toronto to Helsinki connection marks the only direct flight between Canada and Finland

Finnair, is set to soar to new heights next summer, having announced Canada as its newest destination.

As part of the airline’s transatlantic expansion, the Finnish flag carrier will bridge Canada’s largest city, Toronto, with Helsinki, Finnair’s home hub and capital of Finland.

Set to launch on 4 May 2026, this will mark the only direct connection between Canada and Finland, uniting two northern nations which share a love of nature and wildlife, with similar climates.

Finnair’s Canadian service will operate three times per week during the summer season, with flights operated by the airline’s fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy.

Flights are scheduled to depart Toronto Pearson each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 23:40, arriving into the Finnish capital at 14:45 the following afternoon.

On the return, flights will depart Helsinki each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 16:50, arriving into the Canadian city just under nine hours later, at 18:35 local time.

The route marks the first time Finnair has flown to Canada in over a decade, having last served Toronto in 2015, giving travellers the opportunity to explore one of Europe’s ‘coolest’ destinations.

Located at the heart of Northern Europe, Finland has been named the ‘World’s Happiest Country’ for eight consecutive years, boasting culinary delights, unspoilt scenery, and the magic of the Midnight Sun. From Helsinki’s cultural sights and design-forward districts, to Lapland’s national parks, the route offers Canadians the perfect opportunity to explore beyond North America next summer.

Beyond this, the route will open up Canada to unserved cities across the Nordics and Baltics, including the Arctic city of Tromsø, Norway, Tallinn’s medieval Old Town in Estonia, or gateway to the Norwegian fjords, Bergen. Major cities across Europe will also become more accessible, including Berlin, Copenhagen, Rome, and Warsaw.

Those travelling from Canada to India can also make use of the new service, with flights from Toronto timed to allow seamless connections onto Finnair’s daily Delhi route.

Javier Roig Sanchez, Finnair General Manager North America, said: “As many travelers head off on their summer vacations, here at Finnair, we are already looking towards 2026, and are excited to have announced Canada as our newest destination from May next year.

“Offering the only direct connection between the two nations, our route from Toronto to Helsinki signals our commitment to the North American market, and the importance this plays in Finnair’s business.

“With strong demand for travel from Canada to Europe in 2025, and Canada fast becoming one of the most popular long-haul destinations for Europeans, we hope this route will be a hit with success, whether traveling for leisure or business.

“We also expect to see strong demand for travel between Canada and India, as customers experience the ease and convenience of connecting via Helsinki Airport, when travelling between North America and Asia.”

Customers travelling on Finnair from Canada can enjoy Finnair’s €200 million long-haul cabin, including eye-catching non-reclining Business Class (AirLounge) seat, totally-new Premium Economy class with its own dedicated cabin, and a refreshed Economy Class.

Following this news, Finnair will now offer flights to Helsinki from seven North American gateways in 2026, namely Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Seattle and Toronto.

All North American services have been specifically timed to allow for easy connections onto the carrier’s extensive European network, including 25 Nordic and four Baltic destinations.

Finnair offers smooth and easy transfers between flights from as little as 40 minutes, thanks to all flights operating from the same terminal.
