Travelers visiting Australia’s Whitsunday Islands have a refreshed way to explore the Great Barrier Reef following the reopening of Cruise Whitsundays’ Heart Pontoon at Hardy Reef.
The permanent floating platform has undergone an extensive refurbishment designed to create a more comfortable and engaging day-trip experience on the Outer Great Barrier Reef. Improvements include expanded viewing areas, additional shade, upgraded guest facilities, new furnishings and a larger underwater observatory.
The reopening is part of Journey Beyond’s $40 million investment in Whitsundays tourism, which also includes the construction of a new 36-meter catamaran.
A New Day-Trip Experience at Hardy Reef
Located at Hardy Reef, Heart Pontoon provides a base from which visitors can experience the Great Barrier Reef both above and below the water.
The revitalized platform offers more indoor and outdoor space, improved guest flow and additional shaded areas for relaxing between reef activities. Its upgraded facilities are also designed to accommodate groups, private charters and cruise ship passengers.
“The complete overhaul and refurbishment has been all about making the day-reef experience even better, with more space to move both inside and out on the deck, more shade to relax in and upgraded facilities including a spacious underwater observatory and new furnishings throughout,” said Shaun Cawood, general manager of Cruise Whitsundays.
According to Cawood, the changes provide visitors with a more comfortable and effortless way to experience the Outer Great Barrier Reef.
Snorkeling, Semi-Submarine Tours and Reef Education
The Great Barrier Reef Full Day Adventure begins with a scenic cruise through the Whitsunday Islands before arriving at Hardy Reef. Guests then spend approximately four hours at the pontoon, with opportunities to snorkel, explore the underwater observatory and join a guided semi-submarine tour.
Snorkeling equipment is provided, including wetsuits and stinger suits. Certified Master Reef Guides are also available to help visitors better understand the reef’s ecology, biodiversity and marine life.
These expert-led experiences add an educational dimension to the day, introducing guests to the complex ecosystem beneath the surface while providing context about the importance of protecting the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef.
Optional activities include guided snorkeling safaris, scuba diving and scenic helicopter flights. The helicopter experience provides an aerial perspective of the reef and the surrounding Whitsunday Islands, revealing the patterns and colors that are difficult to appreciate from sea level.
An Upgraded Underwater Observatory
One of the highlights of the refurbished Heart Pontoon is its more spacious underwater observatory. The facility allows guests to view coral formations and marine life without entering the water, making the reef more accessible to nonswimmers, families and visitors who prefer to remain dry.
The observatory also offers a different perspective for snorkelers and divers, allowing them to continue watching the underwater environment between activities.
A semi-submarine tour provides another dry option for exploring Hardy Reef. Passengers can look through viewing windows as the vessel travels through the reef environment, accompanied by commentary about its marine species and coral ecosystems.
Dining on the Outer Great Barrier Reef
The full-day experience includes food and refreshments throughout the journey. The day begins with morning tea featuring pastries, fruit and hot beverages.
A buffet lunch is served during the reef visit, with seafood, tropical salads, warm dishes and options for different dietary requirements. Afternoon refreshments and sweet treats are also offered before the return cruise through the Whitsunday Islands.
Reefworld Becomes an Exclusive Overnight Retreat
The return of Heart Pontoon also supports a significant change at Cruise Whitsundays’ nearby Reefworld platform.
Beginning July 20, 2026, Reefworld will operate exclusively as an overnight destination for Reefsleep and Reefsuites guests. Day visitors will instead use Heart Pontoon, allowing overnight guests to enjoy private access to Reefworld after the daytime crowds have departed.
Reefsleep offers travelers the opportunity to sleep beneath the stars on the pontoon’s open-air deck. Reefsuites provide an entirely different experience, with underwater accommodations featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the reef and its marine life.
Separating the day and overnight experiences is intended to create a quieter and more immersive stay at Reefworld. Overnight guests can watch the reef change from daylight to darkness, experience sunset and sunrise on the water, and observe marine activity after most visitors have returned to the mainland.
Supporting Sustainable Tourism in the Whitsundays
Cruise Whitsundays is operated by Australian experiential tourism company Journey Beyond. The operator provides excursions to the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach and islands throughout the Whitsundays, as well as inter-island transportation services.
Several Cruise Whitsundays experiences hold Advanced Eco Certification. The company also supports Eco Barge Clean Seas, an organization working to protect marine life and aquatic environments throughout the Whitsundays.
The refurbished Heart Pontoon forms part of the operator’s broader effort to improve visitor experiences while showcasing and protecting one of Australia’s most important natural environments.
