La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang Starts a New Chapter – Reopening After a Stunning Transformation

Emerging from an extensive revitalisation that both safeguards its storied past and introduces a new era of contemporary elegance, La Résidence Phou Vao has reopened with a completely renewed spirit. Set high on serene Phou Vao Hill, the transformed retreat commands uninterrupted views of Luang Prabang’s UNESCO‑protected temples and sacred mountain ridges, all while honouring its legacy as the former official residence for state guests and dignitaries.

After its acquisition from Belmond by HMD Asia—the team behind the renowned Shinta Mani Hotels—the property embarked on a meticulous redesign led by Brand & Heritage Architect Sanya Souvanna Phouma, a direct descendant of the Lao royal family. His stewardship ensured that every layer of the refresh remained culturally grounded and true to place.

The hotel’s new identity, uniforms and visual language weave together Lao traditions with the understated sophistication of French art de vivre. Staff attire now favours contemporary silhouettes accented with delicate, hand‑finished French embroidery. Even the arrival and departure rituals reflect this dual heritage: guests are welcomed with Ramayana orchestra recordings once reserved for royal ceremonies, and bid farewell to the lilting rhythms of French gypsy jazz.

“We wanted to create a sanctuary that remains true to this unique blend of Lao heritage and French art de vivre while offering contemporary comfort and refinement,” notes Sanya Souvanna Phouma. “Every detail has been carefully considered to provide an atmosphere of quiet elegance and cultural depth.”

Bloom Architects’ redesign introduces a sense of openness and ease throughout the property. Guest rooms have been re‑envisioned to maximise natural light and frame views of the gardens and surrounding mountains, allowing the landscape to become an integral part of the interior experience. A layered lighting concept shifts gently throughout the day, cultivating a serene, elevated atmosphere.

Accessibility enhancements have been thoughtfully incorporated, including improved pathways, bathrooms and room transitions. New connecting‑suite configurations cater to families and small groups, while expanded private terraces—with generous seating and curated maxi bars—create outdoor living spaces ideal for private dining, sunset cocktails or contemplative moments.

Across the 37 suites, lighter woods, verdant accents and bespoke craftsmanship bring warmth and clarity. Bathrooms now feature terrazzo soaking tubs, separate walk‑in showers and spacious dressing areas. Advanced sleep systems, refined lighting controls and discreet technology elevate comfort without disturbing the property’s sense of tranquillity.

Art and storytelling play a central role in the refreshed aesthetic. Works inspired by Lao craftsmanship, historical maps and archival illustrations from 19th‑century explorers—Henri Mouhot, Auguste Pavie and Doudart de Lagrée—sit alongside pieces by acclaimed Lao artist Tiao Nith, whose embroideries are held in major international collections.

The arrival sequence has been redesigned for both simplicity and impact. A more open reception area now frames direct views of Phou Si Pagoda and leads naturally to a new bar—the social nexus between reception and restaurant—and to a boutique showcasing locally crafted treasures.

At the property’s edge, La Brasserie de la Résidence introduces a dining experience with an open kitchen and sweeping panoramas of the pagoda and mountains, arguably one of Luang Prabang’s most striking culinary settings. The menu blends French brasserie favourites with a Lao tasting journey that celebrates the region’s vibrant gastronomic traditions.

Guest experiences draw deeply from the spiritual character of Luang Prabang, where the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers meet. Activities encourage a slower rhythm and a sense of presence—heritage walks through the old town, sunrise breakfasts at the waterfall, or sunset drinks aboard the hotel’s private cruise boat.

Looking toward 2026, the property plans to unveil a new wellness centre, a Presidential Suite and advanced meeting facilities, further strengthening its position as Luang Prabang’s most distinguished address. “Our goal is to redefine the guest experience in Luang Prabang,” says Anthony Lark, Executive Director of HMD Asia. “This transformation is just the beginning, and we are excited to share our broader vision to make La Résidence Phou Vao the ultimate destination for travellers seeking authenticity, elegance and comfort.”

Still the only hotel overlooking Luang Prabang’s iconic temples and sacred mountains, La Résidence Phou Vao occupies a rare vantage point atop the Hill of Kites. Its renewed design ensures it remains a sanctuary of style and soul—an intimate gateway into the essence of this extraordinary destination.
