Meet the Resident Sea Turtles of Eri Maldives

For travelers drawn to the ocean’s most graceful inhabitants, Eri Maldives is offering something far more personal than the typical reef encounter. Here, sea turtles are not simply part of the scenery — they are known, recognized, and woven into the story of the resort itself.

Timed to coincide with World Turtle Day, the resort is spotlighting its unique relationship with the resident turtle population that inhabits the surrounding reefs of the North Malé Atoll. Unlike many luxury resorts where marine life remains an anonymous backdrop, Eri Maldives has built an ongoing connection with the hawksbill turtles that frequent its waters, identifying each by distinctive shell markings, flipper formations, and carapace patterns.

Currently, the resort’s resident dive team has cataloged 14 individually identified hawksbill sea turtles, transforming casual snorkeling encounters into something much more meaningful.

Among the best-known residents is Miss Torti, recognizable by her saw-like shell edges and a noticeable split between her rear scutes. Hank, another familiar face on the reef, is distinguished by an underdeveloped right hind flipper and irregular shell shape, while Farfalle’s beautifully spotted shell resembles a constellation scattered across the ocean floor.

The newest addition to the reef’s growing turtle registry is Otto, the first-ever green sea turtle recorded at the resort — a milestone that quietly reflects the evolving biodiversity of the surrounding marine ecosystem.

Guests have also become part of the conservation story themselves. Several turtles, including Rosie, Cara, Lubi, and Waffle, were named by visitors who encountered previously undocumented turtles during their stay. The tradition continues today, with guests invited to help identify and name newly spotted turtles, creating a personal connection that extends beyond a typical luxury vacation experience.

The resort’s marine-focused experiences continue into June with a series of educational and conservation-inspired ocean programs designed to celebrate and protect the Maldives’ fragile marine environment.

On World Sea Turtle Day on June 16, Eri Maldives will host a special “Turtley” program highlighted by a guided Turtle Search Snorkel experience. Running from 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the excursion combines reef exploration with educational briefings focused on turtle behaviour, ecology, and marine conservation.

The event forms part of a broader month-long ocean awareness initiative at the resort. On Reef Awareness Day on June 1, guests can participate in the Reef Guardians Experience, featuring guided snorkeling safaris through some of the atoll’s vibrant coral ecosystems alongside educational sessions about reef preservation and marine biodiversity. The day concludes with a complimentary Marine Life Quiz at the resort’s Sip&Dip bar.

Meanwhile, World Oceans Day on June 8 will bring additional guided snorkelling adventures focused on the wider marine ecosystem, reinforcing the resort’s ongoing commitment to ocean stewardship, education, and immersive wildlife encounters.

In a destination celebrated for its turquoise lagoons and luxury overwater villas, Eri Maldives offers travelers something increasingly rare — a chance to form a genuine connection with the wildlife that calls the reef home. For turtle lovers, conservation-minded travelers, and families seeking meaningful marine experiences, the resort’s resident turtle community may become the most memorable part of the journey.
