Nobu Hotel Barcelona has earned the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification with a score of 78.79%. This prestigious recognition, awarded by the leading building sustainability certification system, highlights the building’s commitment to energy efficiency, health, and wellbeing. Notably, this makes Nobu Hotel Barcelona Spain’s highest BREEAM rated hotel to date.
The certification process began in January 2023 and was made possible thanks to significant investment from the property owner, ASG, to make environmental and aesthetic enhancements. The BREEAM assessment evaluates multiple aspects, including health and wellbeing, energy efficiency, transportation, water management, resources, resilience, land and ecology, pollution, and exemplary performance.
To meet these standards and achieve the esteemed accreditation, improvements implemented include:
- Facade renovation to improve insulation
- Water optimization with systems in all faucets and pressure-regulating valves
- Additional water meters to control and regulate high water consumption
- Installation of CO2 sensors to improve air quality and climate control
- LED low-energy lighting throughout the building
- Creation of 22 spaces for shared use of bicycles and scooters
- Expansion of green areas and installation of bird boxes on the rooftop
Thanks to these measures, the hotel has reduced its water consumption by 16%; reduced electricity consumption by 29%; and gas consumption by 23%, in spite of a 30% increase in hotel occupancy from 2023 to 2024.
Alberto Selas, General Manager of Nobu Hotel Barcelona, states: “We are extremely proud to announce that Nobu Hotel Barcelona has achieved the prestigious BREEAM certification, with the highest rating in Spain. Through energy-efficient renovations, the optimization of water usage, the implementation of intelligent building systems and promotion of sustainable mobility, we are reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are also proud to promote a more responsible, sustainable model for tourism within our local community in the Sants neighbourhood as well as in the city as a whole, contributing to both local development and a greener future”.
With this recognition, Nobu Hotel Barcelona strengthens its commitment to sustainability and the wellbeing of guests and staff. The hotel has already implemented significant sustainability improvements, and as of February 2025 local Catalan suppliers account for 78% and Spanish suppliers 93% of all procurement, with these numbers continuing to grow this year.
