Hodges Bay Resort and Spa is a luxurious property on the northern tip of Antigua, an icon of tropical relaxation since 2018.
With casual, contemporary and polished Bohemian chic, Hodges Bay prides itself on being one of the best hotels in the world – to say nothing about its rich amenities, beautiful artwork, world-class spa, and prime location.
What goes into creating – and running – a Travel + Leisure-recognized “best hotel in the world?” To learn a bit more about Hodges Bay and life as a hotelier in paradise, we had a quick chat with Jonathan Webster, Director of Operations at Hodges Bay.
Meet Jonathan Webster, Director of Operations
Q: Tell us about your journey. How did you become the Director of Operations of Hodges Bay, Antigua?
A: I was born in Hamilton, Ontario and grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I went to school at the University of Toronto. I was living in Niagara Falls right up until moving to Antigua. I previously worked for one of the owners of Hodges Bay as a manager in his restaurants. I eventually left to pursue a new opportunity and was lucky to advance within a company that owned three hotels. This experience gave me a much broader knowledge of hospitality, restaurants, and rooms. When the need for someone to run the resort, the owner contacted me. Initially, I didn’t give it much thought, but he persisted and ultimately, I had to figure out if I was up for this new challenge.
Q: How would you describe Antigua to say, someone who has never visited before?
A: Antigua truly feels like living in paradise, it’s a small, safe island with friendly people and consistently great weather. On a personal note, one of the biggest adjustments in moving to Antigua was adapting to the laid-back mentality. This did take some time to get used to.
Q: Tell us about Hodges Bay Resort. What do you think draws guests to the property?
A: For anyone seeking a quiet, relaxing getaway, Hodges Bay Resort and Spa is an excellent choice. As we are not an all-inclusive resort, our guests enjoy the freedom to explore the island at their own pace, without feeling confined to an all-inclusive resort. We cater to families and couples and will host groups and weddings. Our spa offers a range of relaxing treatments, including massages, sensory relaxation, manicures, and pedicures.
Q: What are some of the “must-do” activities on the island for you?
A: It depends on your interests. Antigua offers a variety of experiences, so you will find something for everyone. I have not experienced it yet, but I want to do one of the Helicopter tours. As a guest of Hodges Bay Resort and Spa, you’ll enjoy complimentary access to the private island Prickly Pear, including a scenic boat ride to and from the location. The island features a fully equipped kitchen and bar, ensuring a delightful and exclusive experience.
