Cradled by the lush, rolling foothills of the Tsitsikamma Mountains—where days unfold at an unhurried pace and sea air drifts softly inland—Tamodi Estate & Polo Reserve enters a new era defined by tailored experiences and a deeply rooted sense of place. This refined countryside retreat offers a rare blend of pastoral elegance and contemporary comfort, inviting guests to immerse themselves in a landscape where nature, design, and equestrian heritage move in quiet harmony.
Set between the Robberg Peninsula and the protected natural corridors of Kiaruna, the Garden Route, and Annex Arch Rock, Tamodi Estate & Polo Reserve remains one of the Western Cape’s most discreet addresses. Here, understated luxury coexists with expansive wilderness, and the rhythm of rural life is shaped by an enduring relationship with horses and the land.
Perfectly positioned midway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, the estate appeals to modern travelers seeking both escape and belonging. With just ten expansive suites and a stable of exceptional thoroughbreds, Tamodi offers an intimate, residential atmosphere—one that feels less like a hotel and more like a private country home set within a singular, thoughtfully curated estate.
The interiors reflect a philosophy of calm restraint. Shared spaces and guest suites are marked by a refined minimalism that encourages rest and reflection. Design was entrusted to London-based Studio Ashby, led by Sophie Ashby, whose South African roots inform her globally celebrated aesthetic. Raised between South Africa and the UK, Ashby brings a nuanced cultural sensibility to the project, blending international refinement with local resonance.
Under her direction, Studio Ashby harmonized the estate’s natural architecture with custom-made furnishings crafted by skilled artisans. Organic materials, tactile finishes, and bespoke woodwork establish warmth throughout, while handwoven rugs, ceramic accents, and works by contemporary artists—many from the region—add depth and character without excess.
At the heart of the estate lies a central gathering space conceived for relaxed social living. Reminiscent of a private members’ club, it features a library and reading room, shaded terraces, and a swimming pool overlooking the landscape. Each of the ten suites—spanning more than 100 square meters—offers a sanctuary of privacy, complete with fireplaces, freestanding bathtubs, and sweeping views that connect guests to the surrounding terrain.
Dining at Tamodi Estate & Polo Reserve is guided by personalization and seasonality. Days begin with a generous breakfast spread, while lunch and dinner are prepared à la carte according to guest preferences and dietary needs. Ingredients are drawn from the estate’s own gardens and trusted local producers, ensuring freshness and authenticity. Throughout the day, a curated snack selection—including regional biltong—offers a taste of local tradition.

The wine cellar celebrates South Africa’s storied viticultural legacy, featuring labels from historic estates with centuries-old roots. Evenings often unfold over tastings or carefully paired dinners, while aperitivo hour provides a relaxed moment to gather over classic cocktails or thoughtfully crafted non-alcoholic options as the sun dips behind the mountains.
Equestrian life remains central to the estate’s identity. Tamodi’s polo facilities include stables, training tracks, and a full-size playing field, supported by a carefully selected string of 20 horses. Designed to meet the needs of serious players and enthusiasts alike, the reserve is equipped to host training retreats and pre-season camps, reinforcing its standing as a premier polo destination.
Invitation-only tournaments are held throughout the Plettenberg Bay polo season, which runs from November to April. These events honor a tradition that has long shaped sporting life in the Western Cape, bringing together generations through a shared passion for the sport.
Beyond polo, guests are encouraged to explore the richness of the surrounding region. Horseback rides can be arranged on the estate, while the concierge curates experiences ranging from guided nature walks through mountain terrain to riverside strolls near the Matjiesrivier delta. Guests may also venture to the dramatic beaches of Keurbooms and Cathedral Rock, visit nearby wildlife sanctuaries—including the Plettenberg Bay elephant sanctuary—or enjoy private tours of local vineyards.
This latest chapter for Tamodi Estate & Polo Reserve also signals thoughtful growth. Planned additions include a spa, restaurant, wellness café, lounge, and additional suites, all developed in alignment with an environmental restoration initiative. This program focuses on reintroducing indigenous flora—such as fynbos—where invasive species once prevailed, reinforcing the estate’s commitment to ecological stewardship.
Community engagement is equally integral to Tamodi’s vision. The estate actively supports a local school serving children from the surrounding area and the families of its team members, providing access to education and training that foster long-term opportunity and growth.
Located approximately 90 minutes from George International Airport and just 15 minutes from Plettenberg Bay’s private airport, Tamodi Estate & Polo Reserve is a destination designed to be lived in, not rushed through—where luxury is quiet, nature is untamed, and every stay feels deeply personal.
