The Importance of R+D in Women’s Surf Wear: Why Surf Suits Need to be Designed and Tested by Surfers

Ever struggled to find the perfect surf suit that fits your needs and body type? I bet most women can relate to that. Before every surf trip we find ourselves searching for the perfect swimsuit – vibrant colors, sustainable materials, and a design that stays on even in the most hectic surf sessions. It’s about more than just finding a suit – it’s about finding confidence in the water. And it all starts with careful consideration.

Choosing the Right Materials for Surf Suits

When it comes to choosing your dream surf suit, picking the right material is key. We’ve all been there – getting excited about a cute swimsuit, only to see it fall apart after a few uses. That’s why it’s crucial to look for materials that are both sturdy and environmentally friendly. Think about it: When we surf, our surfwear is constantly rubbing against the wax on our surfboards and is exposed to saltwater and sunlight for extended amounts of time. Investing in a suit made from durable and flexible materials ensures it will hold up to the rigors of the waves and last for seasons to come.

Sustainability and Ethical Manufacturing

Surfing is not just about having fun; it’s a way of life that connects us to nature. And a big part of that is respecting the environment, which is why making environmentally friendly choices as a surfer is important.

We’ve witnessed firsthand the damage that pollution can do to the ocean. It makes me sick to my stomach every time there are big rains in Bali and all the trash and plastic washes up to the shore, reminding us how polluted the ocean truly is. That’s why it’s important to choose surf suits that are made ethically. Sure, they might come  with a slightly higher price tag, but they represent an investment in both your surfing experience and the health of our planet. Each purchase is a step towards a cleaner ocean and environment.

Inclusivity in Testing Processes

Surfers come in all shapes and sizes, with different skill levels. A surf suit that fits one’s needs won’t necessarily fit anothers, so the idea of ‘one size fits all’ certainly doesn’t apply to comfortable and high-quality women’s surfwear.

While it may seem impossible to create a surf suit that perfectly fits every single woman’s body types and preferences, the goal is to be as inclusive as possible. Testing on surfers of different sizes and skill levels ensures that each suit feels and looks great on every body type. From beginners to pros, everyone’s input matters in the research and development process.

Various Surf Conditions

Beyond body type and surfing skill level, it’s important to consider the geographical location and the surf conditions. As someone who is based in Bali, I want my surfwear to be light and breezy but also to have UPF 50+ sun protection due to the hot climate. On the other hand, someone living in a colder hemisphere necessarily doesn’t care that much about the UPF 50+ protection. Surf suits that are tested in various surf conditions will better serve every surfer’s needs.

Successful Implementation of R+D in Women’s Surf Wear

So where do you find yourself a surf suit that checks all the boxes – sustainable, comfortable, and flexible? Fortunately, many surf brands are now prioritizing these aspects. Your best bet is to seek out a locally sourced brand that manufactures ethically in small batches, often resulting in handmade surf suits.

Yet, not too long ago, the search for such a brand proved challenging. It was this very struggle that led to the birth of Noserider Surf Club. Our mission? To revolutionize women’s surfwear by offering sustainably manufactured suits tailored to every body type and surf condition.
