Two of the Maldives’ most celebrated luxury resorts—Six Senses Laamu and Six Senses Kanuhura—continue to push the boundaries of eco-luxury travel. With new marine conservation initiatives, expanded wellness offerings, fresh culinary leadership, and immersive guest experiences, the resorts are deepening their commitment to regenerative hospitality.
Set on pristine islands in the Indian Ocean, both properties combine extraordinary natural beauty with meaningful programming designed to protect fragile marine ecosystems while enriching the guest experience.
A Groundbreaking Coral Census at Kanuhura
Six Senses Kanuhura has introduced an ambitious new marine conservation project: the Kanuhura Coral Census. The program is the first long-term 3D reef monitoring initiative ever implemented by a resort.
Created in collaboration with researchers from Newcastle University and University College London, the project uses advanced 3D scanning and artificial intelligence to map reef environments with exceptional precision. Each monitoring site captures more than 1,000 square feet of reef, documenting structural details down to half a millimeter.
Unlike traditional reef surveys that only sample limited areas, the technology creates a fully repeatable digital model of the reef ecosystem. This allows scientists to track coral health, habitat complexity, bleaching events, and coral recruitment over time. The data collected will guide long-term reef restoration efforts and provide valuable insights into the resilience of coral ecosystems in the Maldives.
Wellness Support for New Mothers
Six Senses Kanuhura has also expanded its wellness programming with the introduction of the Postpartum Renewal Journey, a dedicated experience designed to support mothers in the months following childbirth.
The personalized program blends gentle postnatal movement, holistic therapies, mindfulness practices, and nourishing cuisine. Rooted in the brand’s integrative wellness philosophy, the experience provides a peaceful environment for rest, recovery, and reconnection in the calming surroundings of a tropical island.
Looking ahead, the resort’s wellness team will also debut the Soul Journal, a reflective guide designed to help guests set intentions, practice mindfulness, and explore personal growth during retreats or wellness stays. The journal encourages visitors to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with themselves while immersed in the natural rhythm of island life.
A Fresh Culinary Direction
Dining at Six Senses Kanuhura is entering an exciting new phase with the arrival of Anne-Gaëlle Soobaya as Director of Food and Beverage and Kevin Fawkes as Executive Chef.
Soobaya brings an impressive international résumé, having held senior leadership roles at renowned luxury properties including Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, Mandarin Oriental Paris, Rosewood Sand Hill in California, and Mandarin Oriental Marrakech.
Chef Fawkes contributes more than 30 years of global culinary experience. His career includes serving as Culinary Director at Soneva Fushi and working in some of the world’s most acclaimed kitchens, including Noma in Copenhagen as well as London institutions The Savoy and Le Gavroche.
Together, the duo is strengthening the resort’s Eat With Six Senses philosophy—an approach that emphasizes seasonal ingredients, locally sourced produce, and menus built around natural flavors. Their culinary vision also includes interactive dining experiences and educational programming that help guests connect more deeply with Maldivian ingredients and traditions.
Drift Restaurant Reimagined on Its Own Private Island
One of the most unique dining experiences in the Maldives has also been refreshed. Six Senses Kanuhura has completed the renovation and reopening of Drift, its castaway-style restaurant located on the private island of Jehunuhura.
Guests reach the secluded island via a short pontoon boat ride, where the entire island is dedicated to the dining experience—making it the only restaurant in the Maldives situated on its own private island.
The updated concept introduces shaded canopies and tucked-away lounge areas along the jungle edge, creating relaxed and intimate spaces for beachfront dining. The menu focuses on fresh seafood, island-inspired barbecue, and simple dishes prepared with an emphasis on natural flavors and sustainability.
Strengthening Sustainability at Six Senses Laamu
At Six Senses Laamu, sustainability efforts are expanding under the leadership of Laura Jones, recently appointed Director of Sustainability and Conservation.
Jones brings a strong background in marine ecosystem research, ESG strategy, and environmental leadership across nonprofit, academic, and corporate sectors. Her role includes guiding the resort’s sustainability initiatives and overseeing the impact of the Maldives Underwater Initiative, one of the region’s most respected marine conservation programs.
Working with partners such as Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and the Olive Ridley Project, Jones leads a multidisciplinary team focused on marine research, community engagement, and environmental operations.
Her work also includes overseeing the resort’s Sustainability Action Plan and Sustainability Fund while advancing initiatives related to renewable energy, waste reduction, responsible sourcing, and conservation programs throughout Laamu Atoll.
A key part of this effort is the continued development of the Sea Hub of Environmental Learning (SHELL), an educational center at Six Senses Laamu where guests and local communities can participate in hands-on marine learning experiences and research activities.
