How to Prepare Your Vehicle for a Safe Long-Distance Drive in Alabama

Last year, Alabama welcomed approximately 28.6 million visitors to its roads. Tragically, there were 986 car crash fatalities in the state in 2022. There were about 38.5 injuries for every fatality, resulting in over 37,000 injuries. With so many travelers on Alabama highways, properly preparing your vehicle is critical for avoiding accidents and breakdowns. By getting your car road-ready before a long trip, you can maximize safety and enjoy a smooth journey to your destination.

Poor vehicle maintenance is a leading cause of car accidents. If you get into a car accident, exchange insurance information and contact a car accident lawyer in Huntsville, AL, to protect your rights. They will guide you on the legal process after a crash on the highway.

Check the Fluids and Filters of your Car

One of the most important steps before a long drive is ensuring all your vehicle’s fluids are topped up and filters are changed if needed. Be sure to check the following:

  • Oil – Old oil can become contaminated and lose its lubricating properties. Get an oil change if it’s been over 5,000 miles since the last one.
  • Coolant – Helps regulate engine temperature. Make sure it’s filled to the proper level and is not leaking.
  • Brake fluid – Critical for safe stopping. Brake fluid should be clear and free of sediments. Have it flushed according to your maintenance schedule.
  • Windshield washer fluid – Keep the reservoir full so you can clean your windshield if it gets dirty.
  • Fuel filter – A clogged filter can cause stalling or poor performance. Replace it if overdue.
  • Air filter – A dirty air filter can reduce power and fuel economy. Inspect and change it if needed.

Inspect Belts and Hoses before the Alabama Road Trip

On many vehicles, belts and hoses work hard to deliver power and keep systems running. But worn belts and cracked hoses can fail when you least expect it. Give them a close visual inspection, watching for:

  • Dry rot or cracks in rubber hoses
  • Glazing or cracking in belts
  • Leaks or bulges in hoses

Any belts or hoses that are damaged should be replaced before your trip. Also check that they are tightened properly.

Ensure Good Tire Condition and Avoid an Accident on the Road

Your tires are the only contact between your vehicle and the road, so their condition is critical. Examine tires for:

  • Adequate tread depth – should have at least 3mm across the tire.
  • Signs of uneven wear – this can indicate alignment issues.
  • Cuts, gouges, bubbles or bulges – these can lead to blowouts.

Also, check that tire pressures match the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended PSI. Underinflated tires wear out faster and compromise handling and braking.

Test the Battery and Electrical System of your Car

A weak battery is one of the most common causes of breakdowns. Use a battery tester to check its charge and overall condition. Watch for corrosion on terminals and clean if required.

Also turn on lights, flashers and other electronics to confirm proper operation. Check that no warning lights related to the electrical system are illuminated on the dash.

Inspect Windshield Wipers and Lights to Drive Safely Across Alabama

Good visibility is key for safe driving. Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition and that wiper fluid nozzles are spraying properly. Replace any wiper blades that are worn, cracked or leaving streaks.

Ensure all exterior lights are working – headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and fog lights if equipped. Consider carrying spare bulbs in case of a burnout.

With some preventative maintenance and planning, you can hit the open road with confidence. Safe travels!
