World Oceans Day Spotlight: Bawah Reserve Champions in Sustainability

Bawah Reserve is recognized for its remarkable contribution to preserving the ocean and the surrounding land. By 2040, nearly 32 million tons of plastic will enter our oceans, making sustainability and conservation as important as ever. Bawah Reserve continues to pursue tide-turning work for our ocean, planet, and wildlife.

Tucked in Indonesia’s remote Anambas Archipelago, Bawah Reserve pushes boundaries and pioneers marine conservation as guardians of the natural reserve it was built upon. In practicing an earth-first philosophy, Bawah has Swimsol’s innovative and patented SolarSea system. The state-of-the-art setup comprises 18 floating solar platforms, enough to nearly supply the total energy needs for the Reserve.

An ‘ECOmmittee’ meets monthly to create green initiatives: making eco bamboo bins; organizing weekly beach clean-ups; and engaging in turtle conservation are just some of the many projects to come from this. The property is also part of the Anambas Foundation, created to channel funds back into and positively contribute to the local community through providing employment, economic opportunities, and sustainable eco-awareness education by identifying with the local culture, fostering community relationships, and holding a deep respect for local traditions and customs.
