Picture a summer getaway where the kids are constantly discovering new adventures, and parents actually have time to slow down and enjoy the experience too. That’s exactly what families will find in the Innsbruck region, where dramatic Alpine landscapes meet the energy and convenience of a vibrant city.

Innsbruck offers an ideal setting for families looking to reconnect through shared experiences. With mountains, nature, culture, and outdoor activities all within easy reach, it’s a destination where every day can feel different. One morning might involve a scenic mountain hike, while the afternoon could be spent meeting animals, exploring playgrounds, or wandering through Innsbruck’s charming historic centre.

It’s an easy swap: less screen time, more fresh mountain air; fewer daily routines, more memorable moments together.

Family adventures that inspire young explorers

Hiking in the Innsbruck region is anything but ordinary, especially for families travelling with younger children.

In Oberperfuss, the creative Sagenweg (Legend Trail) turns a simple walk into an interactive adventure. Along the route, children can listen to stories told by talking “tree beards” and solve puzzles as they make their way through the trail. At the end, young adventurers are rewarded near the cable car station.

Families looking for a more traditional mountain experience can head to Patscherkofel. The route from the cable car station to the 2,248-metre summit offers a manageable climb with wide paths that are suitable for families, including those travelling with strollers. Along the route, Kofele’s bee trail introduces children to the fascinating world of bees through interactive activities and a fun challenge at the finish.

Meet the animals of the Alps

Animal encounters are often the highlight of a family holiday, and Innsbruck delivers plenty of memorable opportunities.

On the Mieming Plateau, families can experience guided llama walks at Aschlandhof, offering a peaceful way to explore the surrounding scenery alongside these gentle animals.

At Natterer Boden, younger children can spend time with goats, piglets, donkeys, and ponies while parents relax nearby and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.

For an even bigger wildlife experience, Alpenzoo Innsbruck is a must-visit. Home to native Alpine wildlife including ibex, lynx, bears, and birds of prey, the zoo sits high above the city and offers incredible views. Getting there is part of the fun—families can ride the Hungerburgbahn funicular from the city centre.

Big mountain fun for all ages

Adventure comes naturally in the Innsbruck region, and there are plenty of activities designed for families with children of all ages.

A hike to the Drei-Seen-Hütte offers stunning views of turquoise lakes and dramatic mountain scenery. Along the way, families will discover a giant 6.5-metre wooden cow complete with a slide and climbing features—an unexpected highlight for younger travellers.

At Muttereralm, families can spend the day enjoying playgrounds, water attractions, and interactive outdoor installations. Older kids and teens can add more excitement with mountain carts or explore the beginner-friendly bike park, while parents take in sweeping Alpine views.

Accommodation options in the Innsbruck region make travelling with children easy.

Gerhardhof offers traditional camping pitches alongside stylish glamping tents and yurts for families who want a nature-focused escape.
