A Miami sports weekend usually starts with the fun stuff: tickets, hotel, restaurants and maybe some time at the beach.
Whether you’re coming for a Miami Dolphins game, Miami Hurricanes football, the Miami Open, Formula 1, international soccer or a major concert, one thing first-time visitors often underestimate is getting to and from Hard Rock Stadium.
Hard Rock Stadium is in Miami Gardens, in northern Miami-Dade County. If you’re staying in Miami Beach, Brickell, Downtown Miami or Fort Lauderdale, getting to the stadium should be part of your event-day plan—not something you figure out when you’re ready to leave.
You don’t need to build your whole Miami trip around the stadium. You just want the drive, parking and trip home figured out before thousands of other people are trying to do the same thing.
Where Is Hard Rock Stadium?
Hard Rock Stadium is in Miami Gardens. It’s home to the Miami Dolphins and hosts Miami Hurricanes football, the Miami Open, the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, international soccer, concerts and other major events.
If you’re staying in Miami Beach, Brickell or Downtown Miami, you’ll be traveling north. Aventura is closer. From Fort Lauderdale, you’ll be coming south.
The distance on the map doesn’t always tell the whole story. South Florida traffic, highways, local roads and event-day traffic control can all change the drive.
I wouldn’t choose a hotel just because it’s close to the stadium. Stay where it makes sense for the rest of your Miami trip. Just give the stadium day its own plan.
How Early Should You Arrive at Hard Rock Stadium?
Earlier than your normal GPS estimate suggests, especially for a major football game or concert.
Don’t check the drive time that morning and assume it will be the same right before the event. Once traffic starts building around Hard Rock Stadium, the last few miles can look very different.
The event matters too.
For a Miami Dolphins or Hurricanes game, fans may arrive hours before kickoff to tailgate. Miami Open guests come throughout the day for different matches and sessions. During Formula 1, the area becomes part of a much larger multi-day event campus. Concert crowds often build closer to showtime.
That’s why I wouldn’t use the same arrival plan for every Hard Rock Stadium event.
One thing we see on major event days is navigation becoming less useful once police begin controlling intersections around the stadium.
Getting there early gives you time to adjust, find the right entrance, park and walk in without watching the clock.
Decide How You’re Getting to Hard Rock Stadium
There isn’t one option I’d recommend to everybody.
If you’re coming to a Dolphins or Hurricanes game and want to tailgate, I’d start with official stadium parking. You’re inside the stadium parking system and closer to the traditional football tailgating experience.
Private parking is also available in the Miami Gardens neighborhoods around Hard Rock Stadium. That can work well if you want a reserved space outside the official lots and don’t mind walking in.
Rideshare can make sense too, but check the instructions for your specific event. The setup used for a Miami Open tennis session may not be the same one used for a football game or Formula 1 weekend.
Some events also use shuttles, park-and-ride lots or other transportation plans.

Think About the Walk, Not Just the Parking Spot
The closest parking spot isn’t automatically the easiest one.
Parking close to the stadium may mean less walking, but it can also put you closer to the biggest traffic funnels when everybody leaves. Parking farther out may mean a longer walk while putting you outside some of that congestion.
Neither is always better.
Wear comfortable shoes either way. Hard Rock Stadium is a large property, and events like the Miami Open and Formula 1 can involve plenty of walking once you’re inside the event campus too.
Miami weather matters. Heat and humidity can make a short walk feel much longer, and rain can show up quickly.
Before walking away from your car, save the exact location on your phone.
Remember Which Stadium Gate You Used
This is one of the simplest tips I give first-time visitors: take a photo of the gate when you enter Hard Rock Stadium.
The stadium is large, and walking out the wrong side afterward can add unnecessary time when you’re trying to get back to your car or rideshare pickup.
Save your exact parking location too. Don’t rely on something vague like “Yellow Lot” or “near the stadium.” Depending on the event, there can be multiple parking areas and different walking routes.
Knowing your gate and where you parked makes the trip back much easier.
What Is Traffic Like After an Event at Hard Rock Stadium?
Leaving is usually slower than arriving because thousands of people can head out within the same short window.
Arrivals may be spread across several hours. Departures aren’t.
After a Dolphins game, concert or other major event, police may redirect traffic, restrict turns or send cars in a different direction than they came in.
Follow the traffic pattern rather than trying to force your original route.
Rideshare guests should plan for this too. Requesting an Uber immediately doesn’t mean the driver can immediately reach you. Heavy demand, road controls and designated pickup areas can all affect the trip.
Give yourself time and expect the trip out to be slower than the trip in.
Make Hard Rock Stadium Part of a Miami Weekend
A stadium event can fit easily into a larger South Florida trip.
Miami Beach works if you want the ocean. Brickell and Downtown put you near restaurants and nightlife. Aventura gets you closer to the stadium, while Fort Lauderdale works well if you’re spending more of your trip in Broward County.
And don’t completely overlook Miami Gardens.
There’s Caribbean, Jamaican, Haitian and Southern-inspired food around the area that many visitors never experience because they drive straight to the stadium and leave.
If you have time, eating locally is an easy way to see a little more of the neighborhood hosting the event.
Before You Leave the Hotel
Check the current parking, transportation and gate information for your event. A Dolphins game, Miami Open session, Formula 1 weekend and concert can all use the stadium differently.
Know how you’re getting there, give yourself extra time and save your parking or pickup location.
Most importantly, remember which stadium gate you entered through.
