A myriad of renovations and upgrades have debuted and are underway at one of the South’s most lauded destinations, Barnsley Resort. This multifaceted venture entails a reimagined interior design and renovation to the cottage guest rooms and suites, the debut of Biergarten, the addition of pickleball courts, improvements to the Beretta Shooting Grounds, and more. These expansions amplify an already significant year, as 2024 also marks the resort’s 25th anniversary. This renovation plan is possible through South Street Partners, which partnered with the long-standing ownership to guide Barnsley Resort, operated by Davidson Resorts, through its next chapter of growth.
A hallmark of the Barnsley Resort experience, the 39 free-standing cottages, inclusive of 84 guest rooms and suites, just completed a $6.2 million remodel executed by Charlotte Lucas Design, a Charlotte-based interior design firm known for its bold use of color and whimsical detail. Maintaining the welcoming cottage character, while incorporating a fresh appeal, Lucas introduces an elevated atmosphere of reimagined Southern hospitality. The refreshed aesthetic focuses on blending bold patterns with soft details, all inspired by a heritage color palette and the flora and fauna of the Southern region. Headboards and bed skirts boast warm plaids and stripes complemented by soft neutrals and textured walls. Accent wall coverings and floor-to-ceiling draperies of subdued florals and sporting dog scenes provide pops of color, bringing the natural landscape and resort themes indoors. New wooden nightstands and painted dressers further the time-honored-inspired aesthetic, paired against colorful, patterned area rugs. Accessories such as artwork influenced by the resort’s offerings, rattan sconces, vintage-inspired lanterns and other mixed-metal finishes blend seamlessly to feel as if they have been organically collected over time. Bathrooms are elevated with wood vanities, paired with sophisticated checkered tile floors and updated plumbing and lighting to enhance the guest experience. To establish a harmonious aesthetic across the Village Green, cottage facades also received a new color palette. Exterior accents, trims and siding now embrace nature-inspired colors, including shades of Dried Thyme, Sage, Roycroft Bronze Green, Alabaster, Shell White, Toque White, and Charwood-stained patios and doors. The final phase of cottages met completion in late October.
Complementing the newly renovated cottages, additional enhancements include:
- Biergarten– The resort’s village setting is receiving a reimagined and newly built Biergarten, guaranteeing a good stein. Located in the center of the resort village, Biergarten will boast a two-sided stacked stone fireplace and a covered pavilion, allowing guests to enjoy an epic day of football and lawn games in an al fresco setting, rain or shine. A new kitchen and L-shape bar will serve an evolving menu of regional, German and European brews, paired with an all-day menu of biergarten classics, including pretzels and bratwurst, plus barbecue favorites slow-smoked by the resident Pitmaster, wings, salads and sandwiches. Whether one’s on the hunt for a quick beer, a spot to watch the big game or to enjoy a stein with the pup in tow, Biergarten promises a good time for all. A late November completion is anticipated for the Biergarten.
- Sporting – The Beretta Shooting Grounds by High Adventure Company offers an enhanced experience for sporting clays, including a new five-stand station for group and introductory experiences along with the design and installation of two new 15-station clays courses adjacent to the sporting ground’s Clubhouse, which also received an expansive new deck for outdoor events. A new field for Helice, another form of competitive shotgun shooting, was added, expanding the on-site shooting choices. Originating in Italy, the sport involves bringing down a series of uniquely designed targets launched in the air, known as “Helices,” which spin rapidly and unpredictably, testing the participant’s speed and instinct. These options join the resort’s hearty sporting portfolio, which includes seasonal quail and pheasant wingshooting, the Swarovski 1,000-yard challenge and UTV rides. Now, all shooting experiences are offered at one convenient location.
- Pickleball – The resort’s already impressive roster of recreational activities also expanded with the addition of six new pickleball courts. The lighted courts offer leisure and competitive play including team-building options for groups with impressive views of the Jim Fazio-designed golf course.
- Infrastructure – The resort’s ownership team has invested in several infrastructure projects including the construction of a new storage building to positively impact resort team members’ work environment and efficiency to benefit the overall guest experience.
“We are thrilled about these exciting projects which will propel the resort to an entirely new level,” said David Friederich, president, Barnsley Resort. “Barnsley Resort is known for many things – a renowned Fazio golf course, scenic horseback riding, elevated Southern cuisine, and adventure around every turn – but most importantly, as a destination to enjoy with loved ones and create cherished memories. The resort has offered 25 remarkable years of gracious hospitality, and the expansions during this milestone year create new experiences for resort members and guests while introducing Barnsley to a new generation of travelers.”
