Puerto Rico’s commitment to protecting its culture and environment includes encouraging visitors to adopt eco-friendly practices, nurturing the Island’s status as one of the most biodiverse places on earth.
With incredible flora and fauna – from El Yunque Rainforest to rare bioluminescent bays – Puerto Rico is an extraordinary place to rest, recharge, and immerse in the tranquility and wonder that safeguarding nature provides.
Discover Puerto Rico, the Island’s Destination Marketing Organization, recently announced The Green Path, a program that helps people respect and support responsible tourism through a series of eco-friendly practices. These support local businesses and help ensure a sustainable future through certifying people who complete four learning modules found here (https://thegreenpath.discoverpuertorico.com/). Achieving certification unlocks exclusive travel perks and celebrates bolstering Puerto Rico’s natural and cultural preservation.
Mirroring Discover Puerto Rico’s forward-thinking actions, Island golf courses are dedicating resources that increasingly promote enviro and sustainability best practices. For example, Fort Buchanan Golf Club, St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort and Golf Club, and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest Golf & Beach Resort (River Course) have joined Monarchs in the Rough. An Audubon International-led program, Monarchs in the Rough is a sustained habitat-building program aimed at boosting monarch butterfly breeding and migration support – especially along key migration pathways – by turning unused golf course areas into ecological sanctuaries.
Further, both the golf course and resort at Bahia Beach, are certified independently by Audubon International for their successful achievements in sustainability and environmentalism.
Like Discover Puerto Rico’s Green Path program, these efforts illuminate the destination’s and its stakeholders’ dedication to preserving the Island’s natural gifts through positive, eco-friendly program implementation.
“We designed The Green Path as a modern approach to education and engagement,” said Dalissa Zeda, Digital Marketing Director at Discover Puerto Rico. “By making sustainability personal and actionable, we’re helping visitors align their values with their vacation plans, fostering more meaningful travel experiences while supporting the long-term well-being of our Island. That our golf courses are actively joining in this crucial cause means one of our key tourism niches understands the importance of green practices and proactivity.”
