TradeWinds—the values-driven, global company offering eco-friendly, luxury catamaran sailing vacations—has set a bold course for the future of yachting. By 2036, their fleet of 50 some yachts will be predominantly low-emission, with the majority being electric propulsion, clean energy vessels that utilize electric propulsion fueled by solar, wind and hydropower. This ambitious goal positions TradeWinds at the forefront of technological innovation in the yachting industry while demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability.
TradeWinds, who celebrated their 25th anniversary last year, has long prioritized sustainability and marine ecosystem preservation as part of their core values. In 2019, the company took a decisive stand, halting the addition of new yachts to their fleet until emerging technologies enabled the development of innovative vessels powered by renewable energies. This commitment culminated in January 2024 with the launch of AURORA, the world’s first pleasure smart electric propulsion yacht. This summer saw the debut of Twenty5 and Ohana, the company’s second and third electric yachts. Hadali, the fourth, arrived in St. Maarten last month. The company plans to add new electric yachts annually, steadily progressing towards its goal of a fully sustainable fleet by 2036.
“Finding new, more sustainable ways to operate charters is our corporate responsibility, and we take that very seriously. Sustainability is non-negotiable for us, it’s in our DNA,” said Ricardo Flores, Vice President of Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations at TradeWinds. “As first-hand witnesses of the impact tourism can have on our fragile ecosystems, we made the clear decision to be part of the solution. These beliefs drive us to work alongside other pioneers in the yachting industry to seek better solutions for our guests and for the planet.”
In addition to being environmentally friendly, it’s important to note that TradeWind’s well-appointed electric yachts offer a comfortable and luxurious experience for guests. The expansive foredecks feature a sizable lounge with inviting modular sunbeds, and the largest cockpits in their class. But perhaps the most notable difference between the electric yachts and their diesel counterparts is the lack of noise. Energy created by the sun, wind and hydro regeneration are used to power the systems at night for a quiet, vibration-free experience.
All of TradeWinds’ electric powered yachts are custom built by renowned French shipbuilders Fountaine Pajot. As true innovators in the field, Fountain Pajot leads the way in exploring emerging technologies and extend their focus beyond the propulsion system to solar panels, hydro-generators, and smart energy management systems to maximize energy efficiency. TradeWinds’ electric yachts utilize hydro generators, wind turbines, and pods to generate clean energy for low-emission sailings. The electric fleet features 51’ TW5e models and 61’ TW6e models, each five guest cabins featuring queen beds and en-suite baths.
“It has been a great pleasure to collaborate with Tradewinds, a visionary player in the yacht charter business,” noted Romain Motteau, Chief Operation Officer at Fountain Pajot.
“The development of our electric boats has been guided by a deep commitment to sustainability and the preservation of our oceans—a commitment we share with TradeWinds. Our boats stand out for their minimal impact in the environment as well as for their silent operation, providing an exceptional boating experience. Together, we promote a sustainable approach to recreational sailing and cruising, utilizing environmentally friendly technology that truly changes the game.”
Along with adding e-yachts to their charter business, late last year TradeWinds announced the launch of their all-electric yacht ownership program. These TW6e yachts will be built-on-demand for future owners and delivered by Fountaine Pajot. In addition to being one of the first to own a sustainable and sophisticated electric yacht, owners who take advantage of the TradeWinds program receive a host of benefits including a dedicated crew, guaranteed income, maintenance, insurance coverage, and up to 10 fully inclusive sailing vacations every year.
