What’s New in the Algarve, Portugal for 2023

The Algarve in southern Portugal reveals some exciting new accommodation options, facilities and activities for the year ahead.

In 2022 the region welcomed back British and Irish visitors in numbers close to pre-pandemic levels and is forecasting a bumper year ahead with 2023 bookings looking favorable.

Value-for-money is high on holiday makers’ priorities this year and the Algarve is consistently named in the top 3 best value holiday destinations in the annual Post Office’s Holiday Money Survey.

In October 2022 the new law that allows foreigners to work remotely from Portugal for one-year has already issued around 200 digital nomad visas so far attracting workers from around the world including the UK.  

New Facilities
AquaShow Park, a new indoor water park in Quarteira, Algarve will be a welcome addition for families in the cooler months and is the first and only indoor water park in the Algarve and in fact on the Iberian Peninsula. The facility includes slides, swimming pools, family relaxation pools, Jacuzzis, children’s water slides, baby pool, water jets, waterfalls, adventure pool (with climbing wall, hammock, rings), wave pool, children’s pool with slides and water cannons.

New Walking Routes

The municipality of Monchique, the most mountainous part of the region known for its healthy spa water, has introduced five new walking routes. The area is a fabulous destination for visitors seeking a tranquil, nature-based and active holiday. There are three new short distance routes and two connection routes to the Via Algarviana, the long-distance path that crosses the interior of the Algarve crossing the mountains and the town of Monchique. All of these routes are signposted on the ground, allowing visitors to explore the Monchique hills independently and safely.

Hikers and mountain bikers will also appreciate the new English paper guide and mobile app to help guide their way through various pedestrian routes along the popular Via Algarviana route. The guide brings together detailed information on each of the 14 sectors that make up the approximately 300km of the scenic route, from Alcoutim in the east to Cabo de S. Vicente in the west.

New Sustainable Activities

Algarve Sun Boat, the first tourist company to use a 100% ecological fleet without any carbon emissions, has introduced a new boat trip and wine tasting experience using electro-solar boats. Guests join the trip from Portimão Marina which sails up the Arade River towards the inland historical town of Silves to a vineyard. The accompanied guided tour explores the vineyards and allows guests to taste several wines accompanied with tapas while enjoying the spectacular views over the Arade River and Silves. Price per person €45 for 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Bluefleet Boat Trips offer a unique way to explore the stunning coastal scenery Ponta Da Piedade near Lagos with a kayak excursion. Visitors can navigate through the labyrinths of unique caves, grottos, and rock formations in a completely ecological way. It’s the best way to see some of the most magical natural formations of the Algarve.

New Golf Course

Ombria Resort – Ombria Resort north of Loulé opening later this year, has announced a new golf course and club house opening in April 2023.  The new landmark golf experience will include an 18-hole, Par 7 signature course where nature has been fully integrated into the playing experience.  The Clubhouse is being built into the castle-like walls of an existing farm ruin and will feature a sports bar, restaurant, golf shop, swimming pool, sauna and gym facilities.

NEW and Refurbished Accommodation & Hotels

VILA VITA Collection – Vila Vita Collection announced during the latter part of 2022 the launch of their glamorous new property, the Red Chalet. Located in the heart of the charming village of Armação de Pêra. The four-bedroom Red Chalet was built inspired by the opulent luxury of the Belle Époque era. Guests at the Red Chalet looking for the ultimate luxury break are able to request a private chef, waiting staff, as well as take advantage of the exceptional facilities at the sister property VILA VITA Parc.

Wyndham Residences Alvor Bay Hotel – Colossal Panoply, a Lisbon based hotel development company has recently acquired the Wyndham Residences Alvor Bay Hotel. The 149-room hotel will provide enchanting sea views with walking access to the beach while offering double and junior suite accommodations. With plans to open in July 2023 the property will include a restaurant, adults and kids pool and an outdoor fitness centre.

Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort – Scheduled to open in the spring of 2023, the new five-star Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort will have 470 rooms and suites. Located only 600 meters from the sea and a close distance away from the village Alvor. Four restaurants, two bars, a golf course, paddle and tennis courts, a gym facility and six swimming pools are planned to cover the 112,000 square meter resort.

Four Seasons Fairways – Four Seasons Fairways in Quinta do Lago goes into 2023 having recently completed ‘an 8 year, €10million refurbishment of the resort which saw a total overhaul of their villa portfolio and Clubhouse area. A brand-new outdoor terrace dining area for the Amara restaurant is planned to open in the Spring.

New Activities

Skydive Algarve – Located in the coastal town of Alvor, Skydive Algarve is offering the ultimate skydiving experience. Adventure seekers can experience the thrill and excitement of freefall while enjoying breath-taking sea views over the coastline of Portugal at 15,000ft. During the tandem skydive jump, there is now the opportunity to land on the golden sands of Alvor beach.
