Family travel expert at SPL Villas rates and recommends every aspect of the family holiday – from airports and airlines to destinations – so travellers can plan smooth-sailing trips

From tantrums at security to sticky fingers on tablets, family holidays can be chaotic before they even begin. That’s why Sam Willan, family travel expert at SPL Villas, has created the ultimate guide to help parents plan smoother, smarter, and more enjoyable getaways in 2026.

Sam has rated every step of the journey – including the best airports, airlines, destinations, and car hire companies – so families can spend less time stressing and more time making memories.

“Planning a family holiday should be exciting, not exhausting,” says Sam. “We’ve looked at every detail to help parents avoid the common pitfalls and enjoy a seamless, relaxed experience. With over 94.6 million trips abroad made by UK residents in 2024 alone, and 61% of those trips being holidays, it’s clear that Brits are embracing travel more than ever – that’s why making the planning process stress-free is so important.

Best UK airport: London Heathrow

Runner up: Birmingham

Hotbeds of keening kids, exasperated parents and security lines that just seem to go on and on – the drive to the airport is undoubtedly one of the most dread-inducing part of the family holiday.

The measures other parents take to make their experience a bit more bearable often lead to ridable children’s suitcases running over your toes, or tablets with sticky silicone cases on full volume disrupting your zen.

When it comes to UK airports, London Heathrow stands out as the best option for families. It offers a full suite of family-friendly amenities, including spacious play areas, dedicated security lanes for families, and a wide selection of restaurants where kids eat free during school holidays. Terminals 2 through 5 feature popular spots like Big Smoke, Giraffe, and Co-Pilots Bar & Kitchen, while additional perks such as mother and baby rooms and free parking drop-off make the experience even more convenient.

For those outside the capital, Birmingham Airport is a strong contender. Recently named the UK’s best airport by Netflights.com, Birmingham offers thoughtful touches like day-before luggage drop-off, kid-friendly menus and activity packs at terminal restaurants, and a peaceful aircraft viewing area with picnic benches – ideal for screen-free entertainment before boarding.

Best European airport: Athens

Runner up: Dubrovnik

Ultimately, your choice of arrival airport is dependent on your destination, but there’s something to be said for opting for alternative airports should they be more convenient and renting a car or using public transport to reach your accommodation.

Athens and Dubrovnik are particularly well-suited for families, offering efficient layouts, accessible transport links, and amenities that make the arrival process smoother. However, Athens stands out as the winner thanks to its larger scale, more extensive family-friendly facilities, and superior connectivity to a wide range of destinations across Greece. Dubrovnik earns the runner-up spot for its charm and ease of navigation, making it a great choice for families seeking a more relaxed travel experience in Croatia.

Best airline: British Airways

Runner up: easyJet

British Airways earns top marks as the best airline for families, thanks to its priority boarding, tailored children’s meals, and complimentary activity packs that help keep little ones entertained in the air.

For budget-conscious travellers, easyJet is a smart choice. Families with children under four benefit from free early boarding and two free hold items, while the option to select seats together (for a fee) ensures everyone stays close. It’s a practical way to save money for experiences once you arrive at your destination.

Best car hire company: Europcar

With over 3,800 locations in more than 140 countries, Europcar ensures easy access to rental services wherever your journey takes you. Families can choose from a wide range of spacious vehicles like SUVs and minivans, perfect for accommodating both passengers and luggage. Europcar also offers essential extras such as baby seats, child seats, and booster cushions, making travel with young children safer and more comfortable. The booking process is simple and flexible, allowing families to customise their rental with add-ons like GPS, roadside assistance, and additional drivers.

Best all-round destination: The Algarve, Portugal

As for destinations, the Algarve in Portugal remains a classic choice for families. Known for its stunning beaches, reliable sunshine, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s a region that caters exceptionally well to tourists of all ages. The Algarve is also a great option outside of peak summer months, offering milder weather that’s still warmer than the UK, making it ideal for spring or autumn escapes. With a wide range of family-friendly activities and accommodations, it’s a destination that delivers on every front.

Best destination for families with teens: The Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

For families with teenagers, the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia is a hidden gem. Often overlooked in favour of more traditional holiday spots, this region offers a perfect blend of adventure and independence. Teenagers can enjoy water sports around islands like Brač and Hvar, explore Krka National Park, and discover charming coastal towns and cities like Split and Sibenik, all within a safe and welcoming environment. It’s a destination that allows older kids to spread their wings while still enjoying quality time with the family.

Best accessible destination: Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a fantastic destination for family holidays for those with accessibility requirements, thanks to its thoughtful urban design and inclusive tourism initiatives. The city offers a unique blend of beach and city experiences, with accessible beaches like Barceloneta featuring flat promenades, adapted changing facilities and amphibious chairs. Public transport is well-equipped with elevators and ramps, making it easy to navigate by wheelchair, while major attractions such as Barcelona Cathedral, Sagrada Família, Casa Battló and the Picasso Museum offer wheelchair access and free or discounted tickets.
