Often nicknamed the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is one of the must-visit countries during an African safari. Among the most common and visited tourism destinations include the stunning Uganda national parks that are scattered in different regions. In this article, we will cover the five most visited national parks in the country as detailed below;
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Located in southwestern part of the country, Bwindi Impenetrable national park is the most popular destination in Uganda. It is ranked among the most visited destinations in East Africa as well. This ancient rain forest is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas, great apes that are endemic to Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park covers a total surface area of about 321 square kilometers and it offers visitors an unparalleled experience of nature’s marvels. From dense, ancient forests teeming with rare wildlife to scenic trekking routes that lead to breathtaking vistas, Bwindi stands out as a premier destination for eco-tourists and adventure seekers alike.
Within Bwindi there are several activities that can be done during your visit and these include gorilla trekking, gorilla habituation experience, bird watching, nature walks and more.
For those going for gorilla safaris in the park, there are four sectors to opt for and these are; Buhoma, Ruhijja, Nkuringo and Rushaga. Since gorilla trekking is limited to a given number of tourists per day, it is important to book your safari well in advance.
Note: For one to take part in the gorilla trekking experience, he or she must possess a trekking permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or through a licensed tour operator at USD 800.
- Queen Elizabeth National Park
In the western part of Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is also one of the top six most visited parks in Uganda. Spanning 1,978 square kilometers in southwestern Uganda, the largely savanna park stands as one of Africa’s most biodiverse protected areas and the country’s most visited safari destination.
From open savannah to beautiful rain forest and dense papyrus swamps, the park protects the highest number of wildlife species including the four of the five big African wildlife – lions, elephants, leopards and buffalos. The notable wildlife in the park are the tree climbing lions that can be spotted up in the fig trees within the Ishasha Sector.
During your safari in the park, expect to take part in different experiences like boat cruise on Kazinga channel, game drives around Mweya and Northern circuit plains, chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura gorge and bird watching.
- Murchison Falls National Park
Home to the powerful Murchison Falls, where the Nile River forces its way through a narrow gorge, Murchison falls national park is Uganda’s prime game viewing spot. This is Uganda’s largest protected area and it is located in the north eastern part of the country.
The park was named after the magical Murchison falls and it features a number of attractions. The park is home to over 76 species of wildlife including Lions, leopards, Elephants and Buffaloes). Several species of antelopes are found in the park and these include Topis, Oribis, Uganda Kobs, Defassa waterbucks, common elands, bushbucks, Johnson’s Hartebeests etc.
Some of the wildlife that can be spotted during a wildlife safari through the park include the four of the African Big five – lions, elephants, leopards, and buffaloes. Also, on your way to or from Murchison falls national park, you can have a stop at Ziwa Rhino sanctuary for rhino tracking experience.
Other experiences to encounter during your Uganda safari at the park include; boat cruise on the Nile, game drives through the park trails, chimpanzee trekking in nearby Budongo forest and hiking at the top of the falls.
- Kibale National Park
Known as the “Primate Capital of Africa, Kibale National Park is a tropical rainforest in western region of Uganda offering unforgettable chimpanzee tracking experience.
The park protects 13 primate species including chimpanzees, Red- tailed monkeys, Black and white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest Monkeys, Ververt monkeys, the red colobus etc.
The park is a home to over 1500 Chimpanzees out of the 5000 found within the country. With such large numbers in Kibale, tourists have higher chances of sighting them while on a chimpanzee safari.
Besides the opportunity to spot chimpanzees, there is plenty of other wildlife to be seen. The forest is a beautiful lush area where monkeys, birds, forest elephants, small antelopes and butterflies roam around. It’s a unique experience to walk in a rainforest and sense that you are surrounded by life.

- Rwenzori Mountains National Park
Located in the south-western part of Uganda, Rwenzori Mountains National Park is known for its rugged peaks, glaciers, and unique Afro-alpine vegetation. The park is named after the highest point of Uganda and third highest point of Africa – Margherita on Mount Stanley, one of the mountain massifs.
While in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, one can participate to different activities like nature walks, rock hiking and bird watching.
The park hosts 70 mammal species including golden cats, leopards yellow-backed duiker, Rwenzori otters, elephants, etc. Primates to see within the park include black and white colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, Lhoest monkeys, etc. Unique wildlife to see in the park is the rare three horned chameleon.
For ornithologists, the Rwenzoris are home to abour 117 bird species which makes it an Important Birding Area. These include turacos, cuckoos, sun birds etc.
