A Christmas souvenir can be something you make yourself. At Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne this December, that might mean an Advent wreath, a painted winter scene, or a miniature tree decorated to take home. These small acts of creativity are at the center of “A Handmade Christmas,” the resort’s theme for its 2026 festive season.
Set high above Lake Lucerne on the Bürgenberg mountain, the Swiss retreat is bringing together local artisans and its own team for a program built around craftsmanship and shared experiences. Alongside the workshops are Christmas dinners, family activities, spa time, and a New Year’s Eve celebration that will bring guests together after dinner across five restaurants.
For a resort with a history stretching back to 1873, the emphasis on traditional skills feels fitting. The holiday calendar gives guests plenty of reasons to linger, whether around a worktable, over fondue, or beside the pool.
Christmas Crafts and a Torchlight Walk
The resort’s Spycher will host several of the season’s creative sessions. Guests can assemble a traditional Advent wreath over a glass of Champagne, paint a winter landscape, or join a pottery masterclass that includes a personalized apron.
A separate miniature Christmas tree workshop offers another keepsake, with guests decorating their own small tree. Together, the sessions make creating something part of the holiday itself.
Later in December, a guided torchlight hike will lead toward the Hammetschwand Lift before returning to Taverne 1879 for Glühwein and roasted chestnuts. The outing pairs an evening outdoors with a warm finish, adding a distinctly Swiss ritual to the festive schedule.
Christmas Dinner, Brunch, and Afternoon Tea
Christmas Eve brings a choice of dining experiences. At Oak Grill & Pool Patio, a four-course dinner will showcase seasonal ingredients cooked over flame. Verbena by Christian Scharrer will offer a menu reflecting the chef’s approach to refined comfort food.
On Christmas Day, Salle Palace will host brunch with Marennes oysters, lobster cocktail, eggs Benedict, and beef Wellington. Executive Pastry Chef Damián Carini will oversee the dessert buffet, giving those inclined to linger over sweets good reason to leave room.
There are less formal ways to settle into the season, too. Restaurant Taverne will serve traditional Swiss fondue, while Lakeview Lounge & Bar will offer festive afternoon tea in collaboration with Atkinsons. Both provide an opportunity to pause between the more structured celebrations.
Family Traditions, from Letters to Santa to Christmas Films
For younger travelers, the anticipation begins before Christmas Eve. From December 1 through 25, children can leave their wishes in the Bürgenstock Christmas post box, destined for the North Pole.
Santa’s visit is scheduled for December 24, with gifts, homemade cookies, and apple punch adding to the occasion. The wider family program includes crafts, outdoor activities, and Christmas films at the Bürgenstock Cinema.
Families can also arrange a Christmas tree or festive decorations in their room before arrival. Extended Splash ’n’ Flash hours at both the Alpine Spa and Waldhotel Spa will give younger guests more time in the pools during the festive period.
These details make space for familiar holiday rituals while introducing a few new ones, whether the day’s highlight is a letter to Santa, a film together, or a decoration made by hand.
Spa Time and a Winter Farm Visit
Between the celebrations, the resort’s two spas offer quieter ways to spend the day. The Bürgenstock Alpine Spa will feature a myBlend Restorative Glow Facial, while the Waldhotel Spa’s Private Spa Suite provides a retreat for two. Travelers interested in the destination’s wider wellness appeal can also explore DRIFT’s coverage of wellness travel around Lake Lucerne.
For guests booking the resort’s Winter Getaway stay, an excursion extends the experience into the surrounding mountains. Transport by 4×4 or snowmobile, depending on snow conditions, precedes a snowshoe outing through forests and past rocky cliffs to a local farm.
There, lunch with the farmer and their family brings a personal encounter into the itinerary. It is one of the program’s clearest expressions of its emphasis on connection: time outdoors followed by a meal shared with local hosts.
Welcoming 2027 Above the Lake
On December 31, New Year’s Eve dinners will take place at Oak Grill, Spices Kitchen & Terrace, Verbena by Christian Scharrer, Parisa – Persian Cuisine, and Restaurant Taverne. The choices span contemporary Asian and Persian cooking through Swiss fondue chinoise.
From 10 p.m., the celebrations will converge in the Lakeview Ballroom, where a live band and DJ will carry the evening toward midnight.
Details of the festive program and reservations are available through Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne.
