Desert ridgelines, rocky islands, and water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue: Mexico’s Sea of Cortez rewards travelers willing to spend time beyond the beach. A morning might begin watching the horizon for a whale’s spout, followed by a paddle along a quiet shoreline or a guided walk through an island arroyo. Beneath the surface, another landscape comes into view.
UnCruise Adventures brings these experiences together on small-ship journeys through Baja California’s Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez. Its upcoming 2027 and 2028 programs pair active exploration with local knowledge, using the 66-guest Safari Voyager as a comfortable base for days shaped by the sea, wildlife, and weather.
A Small Ship Built Around the Destination
Safari Voyager keeps the surroundings in view. Its air-conditioned lounge has broad, wraparound windows, while outdoor viewing areas give guests space to watch the coastline and scan for marine life. The atmosphere is casual, with a shared dining room and places to settle in with a book between excursions.
The ship has 34 outside cabins, with options ranging from single accommodations to larger suites. Private bathrooms and view windows provide everyday comforts, while cabin layouts vary by category. Choosing a room is worth a little attention: bed configurations and sitting space differ, and travelers sharing with friends may have different priorities from couples.
Much of the onboard equipment is there to get guests out exploring. Kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable skiffs, and snorkeling gear support the expedition program, with a kayak launch platform helping connect life aboard to adventures on the water.
Two Ways to Explore the Sea of Cortez
UnCruise’s current Baja program offers two distinct journeys. For 2027 and 2028, Baja California’s Whales & Sealife is scheduled from January through March, while In Steinbeck’s Wake: An Epic Voyage Through the Sea of Cortez runs in April and May.
Baja California’s Whales & Sealife
This eight-night trip includes seven nights aboard Safari Voyager and one pre-cruise hotel night in San José del Cabo. It is an appealing introduction to the region for travelers who want a mix of wildlife watching, water activities, and time ashore.
The planned experiences range from snorkeling with sea lions and reef fish to exploring the beaches around Honeymoon Cove. In Bahía Agua Verde, guests can meet local rancheros and join a guided ride through the surrounding landscape. Time on the water brings opportunities to look for whales, dolphins, mobula rays, and seabirds.
The itinerary’s appeal lies in that variety. A memorable day might include a close look at life beneath the surface, followed by an entirely different perspective from a desert trail.
In Steinbeck’s Wake
Travelers with more time can choose an 11-night journey comprising 10 nights aboard and one hotel night. Inspired by John Steinbeck’s writing about the Sea of Cortez, the route reaches farther north into the Gulf of California.
The planned itinerary includes places such as Punta Marcial, Bahía de los Ángeles, and Puerto Refugio, with opportunities for kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and exploring shorelines with the expedition team. At Isla San Esteban, a walk through the arroyo introduces the island’s desert environment, while passages through deeper channels provide time to search for marine mammals.
There is a literary thread to the voyage, but no required reading list. Its broader attraction is the opportunity to spend longer exploring remote islands and anchorages, with time to notice the differences between them. Specific stops and activities remain dependent on conditions.
Wildlife Watching with Room for Surprise
The chance to encounter marine life is a major reason to travel here, although no sailing can promise a particular sighting. A passing pod of dolphins, a distant whale, or seabirds gathering above the water can change the focus of the day.
UnCruise builds flexibility into its expedition approach, allowing the captain and guides to respond to opportunities as they arise. That makes curiosity a useful traveling companion: the quieter discoveries along a shoreline can be as absorbing as the larger animals offshore.

Local Connections, Ashore and at the Table
The voyage also offers a closer look at the people who live and work in Baja. UnCruise says its expedition guides are local to the region, and its longstanding relationship with the Romero family in Bahía Agua Verde brings guests into contact with the area’s ranching traditions.
Those connections continue in the galley. The company sources seafood from a local fishermen’s collective and produce from farming families in Miraflores. Baja Beans coffee and Baja Brewing beer add further regional touches. After a day spent exploring, the food offers another way to understand the place beyond its scenery.
Who Will Enjoy This Cruise?
These voyages suit travelers who enjoy spending much of their vacation outdoors. Guided walks, paddling, snorkeling, and small-boat excursions are central to the experience, with activity choices helping guests find their own pace.
It is worth discussing mobility and fitness needs before booking. UnCruise’s Baja preparation guidance says guests should be comfortable walking at least half a mile and need sufficient agility for boarding small boats and moving over uneven terrain. Bring questions about any activity you are unsure about; the right trip should match both your interests and your comfort level.
Planning Your Baja Adventure
Although the journeys are advertised round-trip from San José del Cabo, the ship boards in La Paz. The current program begins with an included airport transfer and a night at Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. The following day, guests travel by coach to La Paz to embark. Dinner on the hotel night is independently arranged.
Pack for both water and land: sun protection, comfortable walking footwear, swimwear, and layers for breezier moments on deck. Review the departure-specific instructions before arranging flights, and confirm equipment needs and dietary requests in advance.
The reward is a vacation with several ways to experience the same coastline: from the ship’s deck, at water level in a kayak, along an island trail, and beneath the surface with a mask and snorkel. Each reveals another part of Baja’s remarkable meeting of desert and sea.
