With search interest in ‘landmarks to visit’ peaking in the UK at the beginning of May1, comparethemarket.com has compiled a list2 of the top 20 most Instagrammed landmarks outside of London, across the UK.

Taking the top spot is Stonehenge with over 800,000 posts. The world-famous stone circle is around 5,000 years old and part of British history. Visitors to the prehistoric site can not only expect an impressive photo opportunity but can find out about the archaeology and history too.

Scottish landmarks take second and third place, with awe-inspiring views at Glencoe (501,182) and the mysterious waters of Loch Ness (460,017).

For those looking for great places to visit in the North of England, the handcrafted stone of York Minster (188,709) offers unrivalled views. Whilst Blackpool Tower (134,013) offers not only incredible views but also plenty of attractions.

Also in the top 20 are the beautiful natural limestone arch of Durdle Door (273,268) and Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, Giant’s Causeway, which has amassed 318,917 posts on Instagram.

Based on the list of 54 UK landmarks outside London, we then analysed the relevant hashtags across social media and chose the top 20 based on the UK landmarks with the highest number of hashtags. The number of hashtag posts is accurate as of 25/05/2022. Please note, UK royal landmarks have been omitted from the analysis.
