Velas Resorts Introduces a Three-Day Wellness Wedding Experience in Mexico

Destination weddings are often filled with celebration, travel and late nights, but they can also leave couples and their guests feeling overwhelmed. Velas Resorts is responding with a new three-day wedding experience that places wellness alongside the ceremony and reception.

Available at participating Velas properties in Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, the program combines guided breathing, cold-water immersion, mindfulness, Mexican-inspired rituals, sleep amenities and restorative spa experiences.

Rather than limiting wellness to a bridal massage or morning yoga class, the experience is designed to support the couple and their guests throughout the complete destination-wedding weekend.

Day One: Cold-Water Immersion and Functional Drinks

The program begins with a group wellness session intended to help guests reset after travelling.

A guided ice-plunge experience is paired with conscious breathing exercises. Cold-water immersion has become a popular feature at wellness resorts, although it is not appropriate for everyone. Guests with cardiovascular conditions or other health concerns should consult a medical professional before participating, and couples may wish to provide a gentler alternative for anyone who prefers not to take part.

After the plunge, guests gather in an open-air lounge scented with essential-oil blends selected to create a calming atmosphere.

Instead of beginning the wedding weekend with a traditional cocktail hour, the lounge features alcohol-free hydration drinks and vitamin beverages. The concept allows guests to socialize after arrival while choosing refreshments intended to support hydration following a flight or long journey.

The opening day is also meant to encourage connection among family members and friends who may be meeting for the first time.

Day Two: Mindfulness, Intentions and a Copal Blessing

The wedding day begins with a private mindfulness meditation on the beach.

Before the ceremony, each guest receives an intention card and is invited to write a blessing, prayer or positive message for the couple. This transforms the audience into active participants while creating keepsakes the newlyweds can revisit after the celebration.

Immediately before the vows, a spiritual guide conducts a cleansing ritual using smoke from Mexican copal resin and fresh aromatic herbs.

Copal has held ceremonial significance in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times and has been used in spiritual practices by Indigenous cultures, including Maya and Aztec communities. At a destination wedding, rituals drawing on these traditions should be explained and conducted respectfully by knowledgeable local practitioners rather than presented simply as decorative entertainment.

Couples can work with the resort’s wedding planners to determine how the ceremony fits their beliefs, preferences and cultural backgrounds.

A Sleep Concierge After the Reception

When guests return to their suites following the reception, a sleep-focused turndown service awaits.

Each sleep kit includes an eye mask, botanical room spray, wellness tea, mineral bath salts and an essential-oil rollerball intended for pulse-point application.

Guests can also access a post-wedding relaxation playlist through a QR code displayed on the suite’s television. The collection features ambient and acoustic soundscapes selected to create a quieter transition after the music, dancing and excitement of the reception.

While amenities such as tea, aromatherapy and soothing music cannot guarantee restful sleep, they can help establish a calming end-of-evening ritual.

The service also reflects a growing destination-wedding trend: extending thoughtful programming beyond the ceremony itself. Instead of leaving guests to recover independently, the wedding itinerary continues when they return to their rooms.

Day Three: A Restorative Spa Experience

The final day moves to the spa for a guided hydrotherapy and body-care experience.

Guests begin with a one-hour circuit incorporating contrast lagoons, sauna sessions, eucalyptus steam and heated thermal beds. A spa attendant guides the group through the different stages and helps guests determine how long to spend in each environment.

Additional sensory treatments are incorporated throughout the circuit. Aloe vera is applied to soothe and hydrate skin after sun exposure, while an orange-and-salt exfoliation removes dry surface skin. A conditioning hair mask is activated by the heat of the eucalyptus steam room, and chilled cucumber slices provide a cooling eye treatment during the sauna session.

Guests then continue to private treatment rooms for mineral-rich body wraps formulated with ingredients such as sea salt and local clay. The treatments draw inspiration from Mexico’s longstanding use of botanical and mineral ingredients in bathing and body-care traditions.

Spa facilities and exact treatment sequences may vary between resorts. Guests who are pregnant or who have medical conditions affected by heat, cold or essential oils should speak with the spa team before participating.

Where the Wellness Wedding Is Available

The three-day experience can be arranged across Velas Resorts’ Mexican portfolio, with participating properties in four major destination-wedding regions.

Riviera Maya

Grand Velas Riviera Maya combines Caribbean beachfront, mangroves and tropical jungle near Playa del Carmen. Couples can choose from beach, garden, terrace, chapel and ballroom settings.

Its SE Spa includes an extensive hydrotherapy experience inspired by the cenotes and natural landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Riviera Nayarit

Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit overlooks Banderas Bay with the Sierra Madre mountains forming a dramatic backdrop. Its gardens, beach and oceanfront locations are suited to both intimate ceremonies and larger gatherings.

Puerto Vallarta

Velas Vallarta offers beachfront event spaces along Banderas Bay and a family-friendly resort setting. Casa Velas provides a smaller, adults-only alternative near Marina Vallarta, with access to a private beach club.

Los Cabos

The Velas portfolio in Los Cabos includes Grand Velas Los Cabos, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos and Mar del Cabo. The region combines desert landscapes with views of the Sea of Cortez, creating a distinctive setting for outdoor ceremonies and spa-focused wedding weekends.

Planning a Wellness-Focused Destination Wedding

The experience is designed as a customizable starting point rather than a fixed itinerary. Couples can work with resort planners to adjust the program to their guest list, wedding style and preferred destination.

Reservations must be arranged at least two months before the wedding date. For an international destination wedding, however, considerably more planning time is advisable. Guests may need advance notice to coordinate flights, accommodations, passports, childcare and time away from work.

Couples should also consider how inclusive the wellness activities will be. Ice plunges, saunas and extended spa circuits may not suit every age, ability or health condition. Offering optional participation and alternative activities will allow guests to enjoy the weekend without feeling pressured.

The most successful wellness wedding is not necessarily the one with the largest number of treatments. It is the one that creates room for rest, conversation and meaningful connection amid the celebration.
