Taking the top spot is the Wild Atlantic Way on the Inishowen Peninsula in Ireland’s County Donegal. At 1,600 miles in length, the coastal route winds across the breath-taking Irish west coast. Dotted with spellbinding cliffs, towering bays, and enigmatic islands, it’s no surprise that the cycling route attracts tourists from across the world who have snapped over 1.7 million posts under the hashtag #wildatlanticway.

Home to the iconic Tour De France, it’s no surprise that France takes the lead as the country with the most picturesque cycling routes – five to be precise. The country’s Camino Francés takes the second spot overall, where the scenic route runs from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port across the border to some of the most outstanding areas of Spain. With 427,561 Instagram posts shared, the route is perfect for culture enthusiasts searching for a leisurely way of encountering the historic sites of O’Cebreiro and Pamplona.

Ranking third on the list is the Cinglés de Ventoux route, another French trail, which begins in the quaint agricultural village of Bédoin. With a total of 208,634 posts on Instagram, cyclists can take in the majestic landscape whilst soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

England also has its fair share of picturesque cycling routes, with three routes making the top 20. The Fred Whitton Challenge, a 112-mile route around the Lakes starting at Grasmere, has had the most posts shared on the social media platform. Cycling pros complete this route in under six hours, but if you’re new to cycling, don’t be disheartened if it takes you over 11 hours.
