Sun Siyam Vilu Reef has introduced a new collection of overwater accommodations in the Maldives, combining private pools, spacious interiors and a playful way to reach the lagoon.
The resort’s 50 new Ocean Signature Villas with Pool and Slide include 48 one-bedroom villas and two larger two-bedroom residences. Every villa features a private pool, an overwater hammock and an 11-meter slide descending directly into the turquoise water below.
The launch marks another chapter for the resort where the Sun Siyam story began. Vilu Reef opened in 1988 as the hospitality group’s original Maldivian property.
A playful take on overwater living
Set above the lagoon, the villas are designed to make the surrounding seascape part of the experience. Their outdoor decks provide space for sunbathing and dining, while private pools and overwater hammocks offer additional places to unwind.
The slides are likely to become the villas’ signature feature, giving guests a direct—and considerably more entertaining—route from their deck into the Indian Ocean.
Inside, dramatic arches and flowing layouts connect the bedrooms, dressing areas and open-plan bathrooms. Freestanding tubs, dual vanities and private en suites bring a residential quality to the accommodations, while 50-inch televisions add a contemporary touch.
The one-bedroom Ocean Signature Villas span 150 square meters. Their living rooms can also be converted into secondary sleeping areas, making the villas suitable for couples as well as families.
Room for families and groups
Travelers requiring additional space can choose one of the resort’s two Two-Bedroom Ocean Signature Villas.
At 330 square meters, each residence includes two master suites, an indoor lounge and dining area, and extensive outdoor living space. The larger infinity pool incorporates a sunken lounge, while sunbeds, an overwater hammock and a private slide complete the deck.
The two-bedroom configuration can accommodate as many as six guests, positioning it as an option for families or friends traveling together.
Design inspired by the Maldivian landscape
London-based Studio Sixty7 developed the interiors, drawing inspiration from the curves, colors and textures of the islands.
Natural materials, sculpted forms and bespoke timber joinery create a relaxed coastal atmosphere without relying too heavily on familiar tropical design motifs. Locally produced artwork adds a distinct sense of place, while soft neutral tones allow the lagoon views to remain the visual focus.
Studio Sixty7 founders and creative directors Lee McNichol and Jose Rivero said the design was intended to reflect the natural rhythm of the Maldives while creating a setting that feels both calm and memorable.
A new chapter for Sun Siyam’s original resort
Vilu Reef occupies a private island in the Maldives’ South Nilandhe Atoll, also known as Dhaalu Atoll. The boutique-style resort combines beach and overwater accommodations with a house reef, watersports, restaurants and wellness experiences.
For Sun Siyam founder, chairman and managing director Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the new villas also carry a personal connection to the company’s history.
“Vilu Reef is where the Sun Siyam story began, and these new villas represent an exciting new chapter,” Mohamed said in announcing the collection.
The latest accommodations balance the familiar appeal of a Maldivian overwater villa with more flexible living space and an element of fun. Private infinity pools may be expected at many upscale island resorts, but a personal slide into the lagoon gives these villas a character of their own.
